Crave Week In Review

Chefs Romano and Rathbun at Iron Fork

by Steven Doyle

Its been another long week at Crave but we have all managed to survive. Next week should also be just as exciting with a grand culmination to Mother’s Day. We will want all of your help trying to decide the perfect gift for mom, but also what a good Brunch spot would be for her. Send us your suggestions!

One of the highlights of the week for me was meeting the artists-in-residency at the Fairmont Dallas. Both Hugo and M.K. are wonderfully talented and cordial. You can find the two-some that are enjoying hotel life in their subterranean digs at the lower level of the Fairmont just below the Starbucks. While there lunch isn’t a bad idea. Be sure to let the artists know you read about them on Crave.

Also this week we enjoyed some new and old dishes at Five Sixty. In particular the crazy new bar menu that is a mere $25 and includes sake or sparkling wine. The view doesn’t suck either.

On the restaurant note, our in-house sommelier paid his respects to one of the Dallas steakhouse institutions, Pappas Brothers. Here he enjoyed some of the finer pinots offered by master sommelier Barbara Werley. Check out the restaurants web site for future events, and of course Crave will keep you updated. It’s what we do.

Dim Sum Choices at Five Sixty

Our favorite advice columnist got us all wondering about when or when not to do the deed with our new partners. Dear Toni is one of our biggest features as she gets more fan mail than any of us!

Another thrill for the week was attending the Observer’s Iron Fork event. The good people there invited yours truly to judge the competition between Gilbert Garza and Scott Romano. It was a close competition, but Romano took the prize with a few great dishes including a wacky good play on the Scotch egg. It was difficult to judge the competition with 900 people staring down my plate, and one angry woman screaming in my ear that I wasn’t eating fast enough — but how fun is that!

Brazos Valley Cheese - One Stop on Scardello Tour

Tomorrow I will be joining the good folks at Scardello for the cheese tour to Waco. I am looking forward to that excursion and promise a full report.

Next week will only get better at Crave and we hope you join us. In addition to all the events we covered Crave started up a Twitter account. Please follow us there and on Facebook. Our Twitter account is @crave_DFW.
