The month of July brings us higher heat and sunny days. It is a time to grill and be grilled. July is also National Hot Dog Month, so we created a list of some pit stops to grab a great dog. Be it a gourmet version with foie, or a standard with simple mustard and relish, we have your dog fix.
Look for this to turn into the year of the hot dog as there are plenty of gourmet hot dog restaurants setting up shop soon in Dallas. It will be ever as big as the burger wars we witnessed over the past year.
Angry Dog – With the very name of what you sell in your title you must be great, or go home. Angry Dog supplies its patrons with a fat, sloppy mess of a dog replete with plenty of chili and cheese. It is one of the best in Dallas and a must for anyone hunting down a dog.
Bite the Weenie — A fairly new doggery located in North Richland Hills that serves up a plethora of dogs on the cheap. Basic dogs start at 2.99, and average 3.69 for some of the fancier styles which include a Chi Dog, Saigon, Coney and many more. Splurge and go for the Tubular Ecstasy which sports a bit of foie gras and only runs a spicy 19.99 each.
Bryan Street Tavern – This amazing dog changes daily and look for some of the more imaginative tube steak you will find in Dallas. The dogs are huge, the buns are fluffy and the toppings are insane.
The Cedars Social – Cedars makes a home-made wiener and is crazy good and well worth the nine bucks you will fork over for a taste. That is all.
Cock & Bull — Another 9.00 pub dog that is made with Kobe beef and served several different ways including our favorite – Chicago-style.
Kenny’s Burger Joint – Kenny is a mad man and he has some great dogs including the two foot insane dog made with Nolan Ryan’s All Natural Beef wiener.
Pour House – This Lakewood draft-house serves up one of the meanest chili dogs you could possible ever want in a dive. The dog is big, cheap and pairs well with PBR for your hipster yearnings.
Old World Sausage Company – One of our very favorite examples of a Chicago dog from a couple that actually are from Chicago and know the design well. This is a cheap, well-made dog that can also be delivered if you live near their Dallas Farmers Market digs.
Twisted Root – The local burger chain also does dogs and does them very well. The tube is 100% beef and you get a choice of bunnage including whole wheat and pretzel. There are plenty of toppings. No, a ton of toppings to choose from. Did we mention that the dog is deep fried?
Wild About Harry’s – Besides a fantastic selection of custard, there are n equal amount of dogs to choose from including the New York (spicy mustard, sauerkraut and onions) and the Knox Street (1000 island, sauerkraut , Swiss cheese).
Angry Dog looses points for including beans in the chili. List is missing the Bad Dog from Goodfriend.
I am an avid Hot Dog Lover and have tried most of your spots and your dead on. I just had a bad experience at Twisted Root with there burger and hope it was just a bad day as I love the place.
