Bread Zeppelin Rocks Our Lunch

Lunch today was fresh and different. Although it consisted of a salad and sandwich, these were not your ordinary lunch choices. We checked out Bread Zeppelin, the new sandwich shop we mentioned was opening their first shop a few months ago. The opened for business very recently and we felt compelled to check this one out.

We chatted with the owners, Troy Charhon and Andrew Schoellkopf, both who have unique culinary backgrounds, and found that the Zeppelin is their own invention. The name sounded as if it was a sandwich choice back East, like a hoagie, grinder or hero, but this was not the case. The Zeppelin is a unique product devised by these guys.  


First let’s start with the sandwich. The Zeppelin bread is made locally by Empire Baking Company. They are really nothing more than flavorful baguettes that are hollowed out. The inside bread is used to make croutons for the salads, so there is virtually no waste. In fact, all their sauces and dressings are made at the store in Irving. After the bread under goes a proper coring, it is stuffed with delicious ingredients, and plenty of them. Each bite of a Zeppelin tastes like you are riding high on a sunny excursion aboard a kitschy German airship.

Well, maybe not like that, but you do have fewer carbs than a traditional sub sandwich, and the flavors are high impact. The Bread Zeppelin concept offers 40 ingredients; 20 dressings – mix it up! After you choose from the list of fresh ingredients, they chop it up fast with their mezzaluna knife, dress it and serve it to you in either a bowl or the trademark Zeppelin.

The salads are just as fresh and excitingly huge. There is enough salad served to share, or to take home for another meal.

Now for a little Zeppelin trivia:

The Art Deco spire of the Empire State Building was originally, if impractically, designed to serve as a mooring mast for Zeppelins. That didn’t work out too well. But the NOLA with Fried Shrimp, Tomato, Red Onion, Pickle, Shredded Provolone served with an Iceberg Blend and a Remoulade is mighty tasty.

The Hindenburg disaster in 1937, along with political and economic issues, hastened the demise of the Zeppelins. There is no disaster by choosing the KALE-IFORNIA salad with CHICKEN or SHRIMP, Kale,  Roasted Pumpkin Seeds, Currants, Pecorino, with Olive Oil & Lemon Juice.

Led Zeppelin are widely considered to be one of the most successful, innovative and influential rock bands in the history of music.
