Kenny Is Smoking Meat In Plano

DSC08406by Steven Doyle

Kenny Bowers can play ball. Equipped only with his love for good food, Kenny has risen through the ranks as a restaurateur starting on Greenville Avenue so many years ago at Daddy Jack’s with his partner Jack Chaplin. This made much sense for the Boston renegade, if you speak to him long enough that accent is a dead giveaway to his roots. What Kenny did for chowda so many years ago he now does on the grill.

Bowers has created this empire that spans the North Dallas arena including Addison, Plano and Frisco. Each has a unique take on food he loves including the Wood Fire Grill with its steaks and seafood, Kenny’s Italian for its bodacious meatballs, and the Burger Joint for, well, the beautiful burgers. Now he has reason to celebrate in the Shops at Legacy in Plano with his very own smokehouse.   Continue reading

Pop Up BBQ? Yes, Please

porkby Steven Doyle

Pop Up restaurants are fun. Tasting cuisine that is not on any menu in town, and inspired for that one evening and fed to a small gathering is definitely my idea of entertainment. There are a small handful of chefs that make the Pop Up their livelihood. Chef DAT comes to mind, as does Frank, the underground private dinner party experience by MasterChef Season 2 finalists Jennie Kelley & Ben Starr. I also enjoy the food styling’s of Chef Nicole. We have discussed all these fun Pop Ups on craveDFW at length.

Now coming your way on Thursday, June 6, 2013 you will have a chance at tasting the first BBQ Pop Up at Garden Café in East Dallas. This is from Robert Lanktree who works for Julian Barsotti at Carbone’s and as sous for Chef DAT. Continue reading

Smoke City Market Makes Our LA BBQ List

smoke cityby Steven Doyle

Friends and family traveling across the country often ask us where to find decent food in various cities. We certainly love the restaurants in New York, and think of Chicago as one of the world’s best food cities. How about brisket in Los Angeles? Travel to Sherman Oaks and you will find a displaced Texan that is sharing up his smokiness to the granola eating crowd in California.   Continue reading

Bone Daddy’s Barbecues The Breastaurant

DSC06216By Steven Doyle

When Mike Leatherwood opened his first Bone Daddy’s House of Smoke in Dallas he wasn’t looking at operating a breastaurant, but somehow along the way he was lumped into that category. He had an all female waitstaff wearing skimpy clothing, so technically that would throw him into the company of Hooters. Interesting enough, the gimmick was to be temporary while he perfected the Addison-based business. More recently Leatherwood re-engineered the uniforms to be more tailored and less revealing. What is left is some really good barbecue, hand-made the old fashioned way.

On a recent visit we learned that training was supreme importance for Leatherwood, and has a two day program where he empowers employees through his personal life coach. It is this treatment that nets a amiable employee and extremely low turn over.

Then there is the barbecue.       Continue reading
