Take Flight to El Tesoro del Inca

by Steven Doyle

Peru is the epicenter for much that we enjoy today. The simple potato has its origins to the Andes and nearly every potato found worldwide can be traced back to Peru. The humble peanut made its way to Africa via the Spaniards, and vast variety of corn stems from the region. One variety of corn is an inedible purple kernel that the natives to Peru make into a sweet drink called chicha morada which can be found at a local restaurant, El Tesoro del Inca.

We stopped into El Tesoro recently after being tipped off to its whereabouts. It sounds so secretive, but when you check the restaurant out you will see what we mean. It is a bit hidden in a small shopping center off Beltline in Irving. If you are not paying much attention you will miss the spot altogether.       Continue reading

DAT Underground Dinner Friday, September 7, 2012

by Steven Doyle

More news from Chef DAT as he makes his way back from his holiday that included nine states and seven underground dinners. DAT has gathered some new ideas and a fresh perspective and will share the recipes and stories of the trip at a special dinner this weekend.

The underground dinner will feature six courses for $70 and is BYOB as usual. We have the full menu below. From the looks of the menu it would appear that DAT picked up an immersion circulator, always a fun gadget to have in a kitchen.      Continue reading

The Road To San Antone: Conan’s Pizza

by Robert Bostick

The wife had a conference in San Antonio and it was decided that we’d make it a family affair so we loaded up the KIA and headed South, thought it might be interesting to document some of the stops along the way.

Driving South on IH-35 the conversation turned to what eats to get once hitting Austin city limits, and there was no question it would be Conan’s Pizza.  We have a long history with Conan’s; my wife remembers her childhood afternoons after a softball game with her family, and my late night conversations with  friends over a pitcher of Shiner and brief employment there.  Continue reading

Anytime (and I mean every time) we drive up or down  the I-35 corridor there is the obligatory pullover at that Capitol of Kolaches in West, TX known as the Czech Stop.  Since 1983 this deli-bakery-Shell station has been crankingout Czechoslovakian goodness that has six hundred travelers daily taking exit 353 to fill their tanks and their bellies.

Top Dallas Bartenders to Compete in Houston’s Speed Rack

by Steven Doyle   photos by Susan Migdol

If you happen to be in Houston this coming weekend you might wish to attend a pretty awesome cocktail competition called Speed Rack that pits some of the hottest bartenders in Louisiana and Texas to raise cash and awareness for breast cancer. Sixteen female bartenders will be in competition for bragging rights, a $500 honorarium and a chance to compete nationally in New York City later in the year. Two of our best female bartenders will be in that competition.

You may have read about both of these women in the past on craveDFW; enter Bonnie Wilson from Whiskey Cake and Trina Nishimura from The Cedars Social representing Dallas in the Houston contest this Sunday, January 22, 2012.         Continue reading

What’s for Supper, Grandpa?

by Steven Doyle

I am not sure if you have seen any of the old reruns of Hee Haw that will pop up on television on the occasional Saturday afternoon, but there was a segment where a character named Grandpa Jones would rattle off a litany of crazy country cooking  and pronounce it supper. The last few days seems like it has been a similar feeding frenzy. A burger here, a whole fish there, and a few cups of pho to settle it all in for the day.

I thought it might be interesting to show a few photos of what I have had over the past week. If you have some recent food shots you wish to share with the craveDFW audience, feel free to send them our way with a description.   Continue reading
