Claws for a Cause

A fantastic event is coming up very soon to benefit our friends at Promise of Peace community garden in East Dallas. Amberjax in Trinity Groves is hosting a crab boil Monday, May 19th from 6 to 9pm.  The $60 price tag wholly benefits the garden, and includes appetizers, dinner, live entertainment and a silent auction. Musical guests include Sally and Bob Ackerman and Haley Coleman. Get your crab on and nab your tickets today.

Happy Pi Day, Ya’ll

On March 12, 2009 your lawmakers  passed a non-binding resolution (HRES 224) recognizing March 14, 2009 as National Pi Day. It is one of the more legit holidays we discuss here, and it is actually an homage to geeks everywhere who see the date as a reason to celebrate due to its mathematical implications. We say any reason to celebrate anything is just fine by us.

Scenes From KNON Gumbo Competition

You know it is time to celebrate Mardi Gras when the Kings of Gumbo show up with their finest as they did last Sunday at Poor David’s Pub for the 13th Annual KNON Gumbo Competition. Sunday was the beginning of the cold snap, but a celebrated crowd of folks showed up, spoon in hand, for a taste of New Orleans.

The event was coordinated by David Pippin who has a pulse on the chefs in Dallas. You might recognize him as the chief behind the State Fair’s chef demonstrations.    Continue reading

What Pie Did I Enjoy On National Pie Day? Amberjax Key Lime!

To celebrate National Pie Day I published a list of some of our favorite pies in the Dallas area. However, after compiling the list it left me hankering for a slice of my very own today. After perusing my list I thought of even more recent pie sightings, and it occurred to me that I left off a very important slice. So I loaded up and headed towards Trinity Groves where Amberjax owner Larry Williams prepares pie all day to keep up with demand.

There are several sweet pies listed on the chalkboard with a few surprises on occasion, but nothing satisfies like a slice of Key Lime when dining on seafood. Perhaps this tradition started in Key West where seafood and limes are abundant, as is this delicious pie.      Continue reading

First Look: Amberjax in Trinity Groves

Tis the season to open a restaurant in Trinity Groves. If you have not checked out the growing number of restaurants that have recently opened in Trinity Groves, you are missing out on a new treasure in Dallas. The most recent to join that list of openings is Amberjax. Located on the northside of the main building, Amberjax is both a seafood market and restaurant combined into one. Amberjax is owned and operated by Larry Williams and Karen Simmons-Williams. Larry was formerly running the kitchen at Rex’s Seafood Market, and jumped ship to open his own restaurant. Originally he planned to stake claim directly across the street from Rex’s, but that plan was scrubbed and he partnered with Phil Romano and Trinity Groves. 

The restaurant opened this past Saturday to a large reception. The room is long and airy with a genteel southern feel. The interior is bright and inviting, and not overly pretentious much like Larry himself. Amberjax is no doubt occupies the largest space in Trinity Groves so far (sans 3015 the cheffy entertainment venue across the parking lot), and also has the largest and most interesting kitchen which is decked out with every appliance known to chefs.    Continue reading

Amberjax To Open Dec 20 In Trinity Groves

Trinity Groves is hopping with a few new restaurants just weeks away from opening. The next restaurant to open in the super cool dining area on the other side of the new Hunt bridge is Amberjax. Check out their website for a full menu that actually reads like a bible. Insiders tell us that the kitchen is equipped with every gadget known in the chef world, and it looks like they are going to use each implement. Amberjax is all about the seafood. Look for menu fare such as BBQ Shrimp Po Boys (my favorite since I am from New Orleans) to Grilled Swordfish and Filet Oscar.

In the market, AmberJax will provide an array of entrees including fresh fish, seafood and prime beef. The market will cater to families on the go, offering take-out and ready-to-cook healthy meals, as well as fresh produce and side items.     Continue reading

Fork Fight Continues With A Chino Win

Last night set up the final battle in the ongoing Trinity Groves Fork Fight. The 10-week throw down that has happily introduced Dallas to the talented line up in a handful of restaurants that will open gave diners a glimpse at the cuisine that will be offered in what could be considered the most inventive sneak peek ever. Kitchen LTO, the pop-up restaurant that changes chefs and concepts every four months will be the first to open, September 9, 2013.   Continue reading
