Five Insanely Good Pies From Unlikely Sources In Dallas

pie1by Steven Doyle

Have that special holiday party to check out and need to bring a sweet bite to share? We have a fine line up of freshly made treats from places that you may not have thought of. There are some lovely bakeries in the Dallas area, like Village Baking Company, Tart Bakery on Lovers Lane, Rush Patisserie in Oak Cliff, and the beloved Swiss Pastry Shop in Fort Worth all come quickly to mind. But how about a few alternative spots where you won’t necessarily be busted for bringing something purchased that won’t be recognized, or even duplicated.

Here is our fun list that will keep your poor baking skills on the down low, and make you the type of guest that will be invited back really soon. Notice all of these restaurants require at least a 24-hour notice unless otherwise noted.   Continue reading

The 2014 Definitive List Of The Best Hot Dogs In Dallas

dogby Steven Doyle

It has been a year since we revised our best hot dog list, and the list changed dramatically. Today we have bigger and better options when it comes to the reliable tube steak. Check out our list of favorites and enjoy all these dogs during National Hot Dog Month:

Luscher’s Post Oak Red Hots:  You might know Brian Luscher; chef, charcuterie maven, owner of The Grape. Just last year he moved into a new arena when he devised the Post Oak Red Hot. This snappy and delicious rendition is part of a full line up of dog related bites that includes an oak smoked hot dog made with locally raised meats. You can also find hand-made accouterments  to devise your own Chi Dog including sport peppers, spicy brown mustard and sweet and hot cucumbers. The dog is sold by the chef at the White Rock Local Market at Green Spot  on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, 8am to 1pm, and the White Rock Local Market at Lakeside on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, 8am to 1pm. For take home goodness try checking out Bolsa Mercado and the Green Grocer.  Luscher’s is the Holy Grail of Dallas dogs. Continue reading

Eat Me: Quail “Wings” at Bowl and Barrel

quailby Steven Doyle

Chicken wings will always be all the rage in bars because they are so easy to make as they are to eat. Flavor delivered on its own natural stick, if you will. Somewhere there are a ton of quail scurrying about without the use of their legs, and we are all the better for it. These are very meaty and spicy specimens found at Bowl and BarrelContinue reading

Happy Pi Day, Ya’ll

piby Steven Doyle

On March 12, 2009 your lawmakers  passed a non-binding resolution (HRES 224) recognizing March 14, 2009 as National Pi Day. It is one of the more legit holidays we discuss here, and it is actually an homage to geeks everywhere who see the date as a reason to celebrate due to its mathematical implications. We say any reason to celebrate anything is just fine by us.

Since we are predominately about food we will suggest a few places to actually enjoy a pi(e) in Dallas.   Continue reading

Here’s The Skinny On A Couple Of Fat Burgers For Two Bucks Tomorrow

SONY DSCby Steven Doyle   photo by Joy Zhang

Tomorrow, September 18 is National Cheeseburger Day. I thought we just celebrated that a few months back with another story, but apparently that was National Hamburger Day. Big difference! Any reason for us to celebrate with a meaty sandwich filled with choice ingredients makes us happy.

We have a few suggestions how to celebrate the day on the cheap, and it will also give you a reason to check out some restaurants you may not have otherwise visited. Mutts Cantina  is located at 2889 Cityplace West Blvd. in Uptown, and they are offering you a $2 cheeseburger. This is all day and dine-in only. It will be a nice day, so perhaps this for lunch.  Continue reading

A Few Spots In Dallas To Find Good Bar Food

DSC06972by Steven Doyle

Sitting at a bar in either a restaurant or a pub you get to know the line on the action at the establishment. This is the very heart of the operation, and your friendly barman has the scoop on everything happening from their vantage point.

This is also the best place to score some fine vittles while soaking up your gin and tonic after an exhausting day of drinking gin and tonics. Sometimes a meal is not in order, but sharing a truly interesting bite at the bar hits the spot before moving on to your next task for the evening.      Continue reading
