Be The First To Sample The New Menu At Private|Social Free

alineaby Steven Doyle

Chef Najat Kaanache has been under remarkable fire in the past few days with the announcement of the retooling of Private Social or P|S. We are fairly certain it reverted back to Private|Social, an name I actually thought was witty. It describes the restaurant perfectly.

You can read about the craziness at the Uncle Nancy website, where even the bad stuff gets a beating now and again. I will agree the P|S menu was over-the-top and for the most part inedible, even for this adventuresome eater. The chicken wings at the bar were thrilling, however.   Continue reading

Derry Leaves Private Social, Natera Joins Marquee

aDSC_3825by Steven Doyle

There has been some crazy in the air the past few weeks. I  have been getting notes from all sorts of industry people the last ten days or so stating that Tiffany Derry was leaving Private Social. When I  finally sent a note to the restaurant’s publicist it wasn’t more than two hours later I read about the news on the Eats Blog.  We wish Tiffany the very best as she works out her new routine.

I think Tiffany is one classy cookie who can cook like no one else, and it will be interesting to see what she does next. I do recall her telling me about her own television program that was possibly in the works.

If the rumor mill is even close to being correct there is more afoot at Private Social that should extremely interesting. Continue reading

5 Food Trends We Enjoyed In 2012

tiffany_derryby Steven Doyle

Trends are difficult to predict, at best. Soon we will publish a list of food trends that we might expect to see in Dallas for 2013, but today we honor several we enjoyed in 2012. It seems odd at times that many chefs and restaurateurs grab onto the same ideas, but many of the trends we see in Dallas were perhaps hot numbers on either coast several years ago. I suppose we like to play it safe on the third coast.

Oysters! This year we stared down the happy end of many shells in the Dallas area. Recently Jon Alexis opened his second seafood market, the TJ’s located on Oak Lawn, and has since brought on a growing crowd Sunday’s where he offers dollar oysters. These aren’t week old bivalves; Alexis ships in oysters daily along with all of his seafood selections. Instead he likes the idea of throwing a Sunday night industry party that celebrates with half priced fish tacos and a growing selection of really awesome oysters for a buck each.  Continue reading

Tiffany Derry Celebrates Anniversary Of Private|Social

by Steven Doyle

Tiffany Derry is celebrating her first anniversary with her restaurant Private|Social, and to kick off the festivities she has revamped her Social menu to include shared plates (we love them) which includes  Korean BBQ Short Ribs with Sweet and Spicy Pickled Cucumbers; Shishito Peppers with Korean Spices, and Sesame Seeds; and Lamb Meatballs with Spicy Marinara Sauce, Goat Cheese and Crusty Bread.

“We’ve had a great first year. To mark the occasion, I wanted to shake things up a bit with the Social menu,” says Derry. “I wanted to keep it approachable by offering affordable shared and large plates.”  Continue reading

Private Social’s New Menu At A Glance

by Steven Doyle

Private Social’s Tiffany Derry is definitely the sweetheart of the rodeo; well, of the Dallas dining scene. Not sure if she takes kindly to rodeos. When she sent out a press release discussing her new, fresh menu I took pause. What’s the girl got up her sleeve?

The Social menu has been completely revamped to include several sharable plates in the price range of $4 to $15. Think grilled pizza with Black Mission figs, honey and arugula; elotes with mayo, chili powder, lime and Cotija cheese; chickpea fritters with coriander, mint, cilantro, chiles and yogurt sauce; and lamb meatballs with spicy marinara sauce, goat cheese and crusted bread.

Grilled pizza with Mission figs with arugula? Sign me up.    Continue reading
