Sommeliers: Stories from The Front Line

mr-creosote1by Andrew Chalk

If you work in the hospitality industry you serve humanity. You are bound to come across all types of people and accumulate some funny anecdotes over the years. I surveyed Dallas sommeliers about the soft underbelly of wine service.

Anthony Martinez at The Gaylord Texan handles thousands of wine orders a week. He still remembers the time that a table asked for straws and drank their wine from a straw. Another time, a guest tasted the wine straight from the bottle.    Continue reading

Ser Steak+Spirit+Bubbly = Good Times

P1010908by James Davidson

Steven couldn’t make the Veuve with a View at Ser Steak+Spirit dinner, so the burden of eating amazing steak and sipping fine champagne fell on my shoulders.  You have to be a team player here at CraveDFW.  Below is how my dutiful evening went.

Mahogany aromas greeted me when I stepped off the elevator on the 27th floor of the Hilton Anatole.  The area I was seated had an intimate feel like the rest of the restaurant.  Stephanie a superb waitresses served me a glass of the Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut as I appreciated the Dallas skyline.  Lights from commuters on 35 reflected of the atrium of the hotel as I enjoy my appley champagne.  It’s going to be a good night.    Continue reading

Veuve with a View Dinner at SER Steak + Spirit December 12

serby Steven Doyle

We try to keep our good readers up on the latest events coming up, and today we were informed of one pretty special evening in Dallas. Consider this one a “Veuve with a View”, a  5-course dinner on Thursday, December 12, 2013 inspired by Veuve La Grande Dame champagne and served atop the Anatole Hilton at one of our favorite restaurants.  One of the most breathtaking views of Dallas could only be accentuated by none other than Veuve La Grande Dame Champagne. SĒR Steak + Spirits will be hosting this 5-course dinner menu inspired by La Grande Dame at $169 inclusive.  You will want to make reservations as they are limited. Call (214) 761-7470 to secure your seating.

We have a preview menu, and this one is something special. Continue reading

At Sēr Steak+Spirits The Friday Tasting Menu Is All Seafood — Sēriously!

logoby Andrew Chalk

Check out Sēr any Friday night and stand witness to execuchef Anthony Van Camp crafting himself a reputation as something of an enfant terrible. Having established Sēr as a serious contender among steakhouses in this carnivorous town, he has turned the six-course tasting menu ($90, or $135 with wine pairings) into a seafood lover’s dream. I was an invited guest at a recent media event. Check out the dishes we had in the pictures below.  Continue reading

Happy Chefsgiving: Anthony Van Camp

by Steven Doyle

Thanksgiving is upon us once again and all the gobblers are running for cover. To get you in the mood for a little fun and relaxation we asked a few chefs around Dallas a few questions so we get our dinner cooked just right. We will run their answers both today and tomorrow, so check back often to see how your favorite chef weighs in on the holiday.

Anthony Van Camp is the Executive Chef at the new and very sexy steakhouse SER Steak+Spirits which is located atop the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. There the chef wunderkind performs in his very open kitchen gallery sending out amazing steaks and seafood items, along with some very special surprises. Did we mention he has a talented chef-wife?  Nicole Van Camp runs her not-so-secret underground chef business that never ceases to amaze as she brings a large bounty from local ranchers and growers.

If you still have not made holiday dinner plans, you can drop by his restaurant SER as they are not requiring reservations. Plus it’s the best view ion Dallas. Let’s look in on Van Camp’s advice for us this holiday. Continue reading
