Eat Me: Crab Fat Caramel Wings at Hot Joy in San Antonio

hot joy4by Steven Doyle

One of the greatest late night meals I have experienced in a long time was after a party in the King William District in San Antonio. It was nearing 1am and I had a hunger that only food would cure. Fortunately for me, there was a beacon that cried out in the night, not too unlike a blazing holy grail, and it lead me to the path of Hot Joy.

Hot Joy is all about the funkiness. The decor is cheesy Asian resell, the drinks are blow-me-down crazy good. The food, well the food is a blend of fusion that may have lost its way, but in a good sense of deliciousness. Here you will find a bowl of ramen such as the Double Miso with its shitake sofrito, burnt garlic oil, baby corn and soft egg that is ever so delicious. Get it further un-vegetarian-ized by adding pork belly for an extra 4 bucks. They also make a more traditional Tonkotsu ramen.  Continue reading

Burger Beat: The Sir

DSC04758by Steven Doyle

Last month Uptown’s Ketchup Burger Bar took on a new patina replete with a name and menu revamp. The popular burger haunt located at 3208 N Hall, just off McKinney Avenue, now has a sleek sexy atmosphere along with a fun bar menu made up of burgers and wings, along with the new name The Sir. The restaurant is still owned by Yaser Khalaf (Souk, Baboush), and is now joined in partnership with brothers Niko and J.D. Ybañez and their friend Ben Scott, a recent contestant on television’s “Bachelor in Paradise”.

The consulting chef is Souk’s Norman Grimm who was looking for a great product at a very affordable price point. The burgers range from a simple cheeseburger, loaded with some pretty terrific bread and butter pickles, to a more outrageous PB&J version with peanut butter and jelly along with bacon and jalapenos. Sounds a bit out there, but excellent in its execution. There is also a loaded burger with a fried egg, and seriously eggs are the perfect burger condiment, apple smoked bacon and fried onion rings.    Continue reading

Local WingBucket Planning Expansion

DSC04093by Steven Doyle

There is nothing quite as delicious as that perennial bar snack, the chicken wing. The tiny blasts of tender flavor can be jooked up in all sorts of seasoning and impart whatever imaginative smack the cook wishes to present. However, the sad state of affairs with this particular chicken part is that in recent years the wing has been relegated to frozen pre-cooked and pre-flavored masses of disappointment. There are, however, several terrific places in Dallas to find the chicken wing in its natural glory, made fresh and from scratch and coated with as much imagination as the bird can stand. Enter WingBucket.

Owned by Nhat Ngo who is a second generation restaurant owner, and is personally on his fourth attempt at creating something successful. As the saying should go (at least in Ngo’s case) fourth time a charm. Ngo comes from a family who specialized in pho, and has restaurants across DFW. What his family did for noodles Ngo wishes to do for chicken.    Continue reading

Plucker’s Wing Bar in Addison had their 2nd Annual Chicken Wing Eating Competition last Thursday.  From the turnout, it was a huge success for the establishment.  It helped that The Ticket was doing a revolving live feed with different guests.  Also on hand were The Ticket sport girls who were handing out tons of prizes to guests.  The eating competition was to be the last event for Plucker’s.  There were several familiar faces within the local amateur eating field.    Continue reading

What is special about today? One of our favorite hidden gems in the Bishop Arts District is Ten Bells Tavern where they continue to throw down with some pretty awesome food that happens to be in a bar. The kitchen is ever so tiny, but the flavors are huge. Continue reading

Ten Bell’s Wings Gets National Shout Out

ten bellsby Steven Doyle

The Robb Report is a luxury lifestyle magazine that reports on ultra-exclusive timepieces, yachts, hidden destinations to the stars and on occasion haught gastronomy. The latter is something we could definitely wrap our minds around (and bellies). Well, we do enjoy the finer Swiss watches as well, but our dining habits take up the bulk of our expendable income. Last week we caught wind that a local restaurant is featured in the latest issue. It is a spot we recommended many times, so we are in good company.     Continue reading
