Starkbierfest at Common Table

by Steven Doyle

It’s called Starkbierfest, that happy German time of year that nearly rivals Oktoberfest, and it is their salute to early Spring and strong beer. Strong beer doesn’t necessarily refer to the alcohol content in the beer, but rather is a throw-back to the monks who brewed this beer surviving on the spoils of brewing and its ability to carry them 40-days through Lent.

One of the most original party’s for the festival is at Paulaner “Nockherberg” brewery just south of Munich. Thousands of locals and tourists alike converge on the city to enjoy beer made especially for the occasion and is served in one-liter ceramic steins called Keferloher.

Dallas will celebrate its own Starkbierfest this weekend at The Common Table Saturday 1 to 5PM where they will be kicking it with complimentary Paulaner porcelain beer steins for the first 100, special German food prepared by their new chef Mike Smith. The staff will be sporting lederhosen and other authentic costumes to get the crowd in the proper mood.  Admission for the event is free.

We will follow up Monday and interview the Common Table’s new chef. Crave also prepared a video of chef Smith preparing one of his new nightly specials. You won’t want to miss this.
