Moth Ale Week Wrap-Up‏

The conclusion of week-long affair of beer dinners and events at the Meddlesome Moth brought out a set of 52 beers that were saved for a special occasion. Craft beer enthusiasts gathered at the Moth last Saturday to enjoy a spectacular selection of taps.  

The variety of beers to sample was diverse, ranging from new beers to Texas, older vintages, as well as barrel-aged beers. The Moth’s Captain Keith and Cicerone Matt Quenette were on hand, shaking hands and chatting with attendees. Representatives from breweries such as Jester King, Stone Brewing Company, and Avery Brewing were also in attendance.

Ten two ounce tastings may not sound like a lot, but almost the entire lineup was full of heavy-hitting, high alcohol volume beers. Attendees were also provided with a selection of four entrees: fried chicken, bangers and mash, ribs, or chili and cornbread. There was also plenty of fried hominy scattered around the Moth for everyone to munch on.

The first keg to kick was the (512)  Whiskey Barrel Aged Double Pecan Porter. The oakiness and bourbon characteristics from aging in Jack Daniel’s barrels were prominent in the nose and mouthfeel, yet these were balanced out by a presence of roasted coffee and pecan flavors. A very drinkable, enjoyable, and deceptive beer as it hides the alcohol extremely well.

Of the items other items we sampled, here were the standouts:

Pecan Porter and One from (512)

A firkin of Joe’s Pilsner from Avery Brewing was also brought out towards the end of the event. From what I understand, most of the lineup from saturday should still be available throughout the next several days at the Moth. I know I’ll be craving the Allagash stuff once they’ve left Texas.
