Days of Taste Experience

by Steven Doyle

The Crave staff took the morning off from their normal duties and assembled at the Dallas Farmers Market to participate in one of the last few Days of Taste put on by the American Institute of Wine and Food. The 8 day event is held through out the farmers market to educate 4th and 5th grade elementary students in Dallas public schools.

Through the program, students have the opportunity to explore the nuances of taste through the five senses with a tasting component guided by a chef, a visit with a local farmer to discover the wealth and variety of products grown and that are available locally, and prepare a Harvest salad using fresh produce that the they have purchased themselves at the Dallas Farmer’s Market. A variety of volunteers share their enthusiasm for fresh ingredients, cooking, and love of food. The program teaches kids the concept of “from farm to table”-one that is difficult for kids to grasp these days.

All the photos shown here were taken by the children in my group.

We were particularly happy to participate and look forward to helping out next year. I wanted to thank the volunteers that showed up on our behalf.  I especially enjoyed working with chef Janice Provost who helped my table in preparing a veritable buffet of items in just a matter of minutes with the help of the tiny hands of the children.
