Wachu Tacobot Willis? Macho Nacho

by Danielle Leahy

Tacos are not known for being the healthiest item in the World. This is a common Tacobot lament when viewing another menu full of meat, cheese, and not much else. Thank the Salsa Gods for places like Macho Nacho on Cedar Springs bringing a refreshing and healthier twist to our traditional Tex-Mex favorites. Specializing in locally -sourced produce the menu at Macho Nacho is sure to satisfy a taco-lovers taste without sacrificing all those hard-earned hours in the gym.

Located in the old Hunky’s Hamburgers spot at the corner of Cedar Springs and Throckmorton the small but comfortable space is decked out in crisp white, dark chocolates, and bright orange. Plush enough to be mistake for an upscale coffee lounge or boutique bar, the ample patio more than doubles the seating of the inside.

Macho Nacho shines where other taco places usually stumble: keeping the food healthy and correctly proportioned without sacrificing flavour. It’s newly redesigned menu features $4.99 Lunch Specials such as street tacos, Shiner Bock  BBQ Chicken Sliders, and half orders of the nachos. The light menu items include Skinny Queso, taco salads, build your own bowls (with ground turkey options), and the Gym Rat Tacos made with your choice of meat, whole-wheat tortillas, low-fat cheddar cheese, and non-fat Greek yogurt just to name a few of the ingredients.

Their menu items aren’t huge but they are filling. Our recent lunch visit left everyone feeling full and happy without sending us into a food coma for the rest of the workday.

However, it is one of their unhealthiest items that is also their best…THE QUESO. The Macho Nacho chips and queso is probably one of the best I have ever had. The chips are long thin strips of tortilla, perfectly crisped, and seasoned with Mexican Spices. The queso is the kind of gooey, well seasoned, chunky (there’s corn in them there queso!), amazingness that so many Mexican Restaurants miss the mark on.

Pair it with one of their signature Watermelon Mojitos and you can leave me in the corner to myself, whimpering in delight, and guarding my queso from anyone else’s errant chip.
