Brunch at Fernando’s

by Steven Doyle

A second location for Fernando’s, a TexMex restaurant that opened at Northwest Hwy and Midway in 2005, has opened. The new Fernando’s is located up top of Travis Walk Shopping Center on Travis near Knox.

We set out on Christmas Eve with a large group to sample the new restaurant’s brunch and to take advantage of the bottomless mimosa situation that costs a mere buck. They were free until the recent flack with the TABC. Seems TABC doesn’t like brunch. Or free mimosas.

The day was blustery with light rainfall all day, but we sat on the well covered patio next to a few stand-up portable heaters and were very snug and warm. As the group filtered in, each with a unique wacky Christmas shopping mishap, we enjoyed the mimosas and chips. Particularly wonderful are the trio of sauces that includes a cilantro-lime, creamy avocado and your standard house-made red chile. The sauces make plowing through the chips a happy task, especially when well lubricated with the many mimosas.

As orders were placed we were happy to note that this may well be the most economical brunch in the city with most dishes hovering around the $8.95 mark.

The service is quite speedy, the drinks definitely took off the edge, and the food was really nice.  Brunch is served both Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm.
