Bolivia Shuns McDonalds

by Steven Doyle

What would happen if we all stopped eating Big Macs? One Latin American country knows: they close their doors and go away.

After a powerful struggle and a 14-year campaign McDonalds decided to call it quits citing poor sales and low margins in a restructuring plan over seven countries. The company shuttered eight Bolivian restaurants in the major cities of La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra at year’s end. The fast food giant is simply unable to succeed in nations where the masses decry poor quality and mass production. These people are actually living proof that slow food can work en masse.

Lets all go grab an empanada and celebrate their victory. We suggest the very real and handmade versions at Empa Mundo in Irving. This family run restaurant makes many varieties including a Criolla (beef, onions, olives, raisins and egg) and a chorizo, peppers and onion version. So many to choose from you will want to try them all.
