Stonewall Gardens Food Truck Rally

by Steven Doyle

As food trucks become more entrenched into our daily routine we are fining more and more popping up. There will be at least five new versions roll out this month alone hitting the streets of DFW.

Local charities have already corralled the trucks in various fashion with events to raise funds for their concerns, and today we wish to direct you towards one such event that will benefit a local elementary school garden and science program.

Stonewall Jackson Elementary at 5828 Mockingbird Lane in Dallas announced their 2012 Food Truck Field Day Roll Up and Chow Down at the first annual Food Truck Field Day on March 31st from 11am until 3pm. Ten of Dallas’ favorite mobile eateries will descend upon the Stonewall field for a day of tasty treats, tunes and more. $10 tickets can be purchased the day of the event and all proceeds benefit Stonewall Gardens. Ticket price does not include food purchases.

Stonewall Gardens is a volunteer-operated non-profit organization that supports the learning garden at Stonewall Jackson Elementary. The Garden is a 20,000 square foot outdoor laboratory where students tend crops, study the ecosystem, and conduct scientific experiments using a hands-on approach in order to enrich their understanding of science and strengthen their connection to nature.

When Stonewall Gardens began almost 15 years ago, we had a simple goal – help children learn about the natural world in a garden they could tend themselves. Teacher and parent volunteers planted a small plot of beans in an unused corner of the grounds of Stonewall Jackson Elementary as a living example of the life cycle of plants. That tiny garden plot captured the children’s imagination and cultivated their curiosity. As they learned, the garden grew.

Today, the original plot has evolved into a 20,000 square foot garden, where students learn from a rich academic program. Over the past decade, thousands of students have planted, cultivated and harvested their own crops, growing their understanding of – and connection to – the natural world.
