The wife had a conference in San Antonio and it was decided that we’d make it a family affair so we loaded up the KIA and headed South, and thought it might be interesting to document some of the stops along the way.
Anytime (and I mean every time) we drive up or down the I-35 corridor there is the obligatory pullover at that Capitol of Kolaches in West, TX known as the Czech Stop. Since 1983 this deli-bakery-Shell station has been crankingout Czechoslovakian goodness that has six hundred travelers daily taking exit 353 to fill their tanks and their bellies.
The first thing you notice as you notice as you walk in is the long line at the counter where the friendly apron clad staff serve kolaches and sandwiches of every possible configuration. Don’t worry, these lines move fast and after placing your order you can always grab a coffee or a visit to the loo. Once your name is called they’ll even ask you if you want them warmed up. I’ve always opted for the jalapeno sausage and cheese kolaches, but the cream cheese type have been known to die for. While tempted to try the Reuben, time wouldn’t allow it this time, but next trip for sure.

Czech stop is an absolute must for us EVERY time we go that way. Every kolache is just divine and I’m ready for my next roadtrip to get more!
