Beat The Heat With Flavor

by Steven Doyle

If you are like us you might be looking for more ways to cool off during the searing heat wave this summer. We mentioned a new ice cream purveyor, Carnival Barker’s, yesterday but they do not have their own stand to scoop just yet. We have a few creamy ideas you may not have thought of and we want to share those with you today.

Sweet Firefly: Owned by Angie Conard, Sweet Firefly is tucked away in a beautiful oasis of Richardson in Canyon Creek. The newish shop features an array of interesting hand-made flavors of ice cream including their most popular Sea Salt Caramel. Other flavors that will cool you off include Vanilla Bourbon and Coffee Toffee. This is a one-up location with no future locations currently in the plans. You are able to try before you buy, and there are plenty of flavors to plow through to ensure future visits.

Henry’s: Henry sells plenty of ice cream, not only in his Plano shop, but throughout the city in a whole host of restaurants including Komali and Parigi. You can generally find a few pints for sale at Jimmy’s Food Market and Polka Dot Bakery has a freezer case full of about a dozen rotating flavors. Henry’s is the real deal and has interesting flavors, and is always on the prowl for more.

Creamy Bastard: With a name like that you really, really have to be good. Fortunately for owner Melanie Orris her frozen custard makes the grade. This food truck based shop will actually deliver anywhere in Dallas, which is phenomenal. The best way to get a flavor is to email Melanie and she will deliver to your front door. Think about Valrhona Chocolate Espresso Bean or try the MBW, the Maple Bacon Waffle pizelle.

Dude, Sweet Chocolate: Proprietor and chocolatier Katherine Clapner isn’t just all about her uniquely flavored chocolates, although we are addicted to her Crack-In-The-Box. During heated summer months Clapner also makes some mighty fine push up pops in flavors such as Fungus Among Us, Juniper Berry and Smoke, Burnt Tarragon and White Chocolate which are all currently in stock.
