First Look: Tacos & Avocados

by Robyn Folmar

Monday was the official opening of Tacos & Avocados in Roanoke. It was only a week ago that Cowboy Chow shut the doors for renovations in preparation for the new culinary direction of T&A. As expected, the team behind Chef Jason Boso created a restaurant heavy on atmosphere, perfect for local families during the day and folks wanting a good time at night.

Annihilate your inner vegetarian with braised brisket, carnitas, ribeye and fried chicken tacos. The 3 Little Pigs taco is escaping its tortilla with carnitas, chorizo and bacon. Fresh fish, fried avocado veggie, and a very flavorful bison brisket taco round out the options. With paper towels and house made salsa on every table and Jimi Hendrix playing overhead, you’ve got yourself a down-home vibe perfect for Roanoke.

Tacos run from $3 to $5 each and can be ordered with house specialties such as elotes, avocado fries, smashed avocados, and ceviche. Dessert is self-serve and on the honor-system at the $1 paletas cart.

The bar was equipped with two flat screen TV’s, a few margarita machines and plenty of tequila. Tacos & Avocados offers just about any flavor margarita your suburban brain could hope for; from spicy Mexican pepper to blackberry-thyme.  For just $4 a pop, it’s hard to beat. Tequilas are offered from Patron Silver to Don Julio 1942. The stand-outs were the very spicy chile infused sipping tequila and the Bloody Maria.

Thursdays are karaoke night with festivities starting at 9:00.  Live music is featured on Fridays and Saturdays. Don’t stop here if you are looking for authentic higado, tripe or lengua but Tacos & Avocados is a great fit for the area and certainly contributes to the charm of Roanoke.
