One of the journeys of being an artist is making sure that people are able to see your artwork. Some show in museums, other show in fairs, but the most common place for an artist who has not made it to a museum is showing in a gallery. Taylor Ellis is WAAS Gallery’s newest resident artist. On Saturday April 13th, he will open a show called “78 on deck” along the side with collaborative works by Phillip McVean.
In this exhibition Ellis has created a series of tarot cards, which are illustrated through digital design. Being inspired by a tarot reading which his friend had given to him and the hunger for creating an art show, he developed a group of images which would lead to him not only telling his future, but the future of others.
Having a whimsical appearance in each design, he creates his images using colors, which draw the viewer into a world of mystery. Originally having dreams of being a comic book illustrator, but then learning that many young illustrators are only able to afford printing in black and white, he decided that fine art would be a way to allow the works to be brought to life in color.
As you look deeper into each image, you notice that texture is incorporated into the piece, giving it depth, and bringing out the meaning of what each card is saying. Having personal attachment to the deck, aka the “Ellis Deck”, allows him to understand the journeys of enlightenment.
As someone who has never had their fortune told, I was intrigued to have Ellis read me. Sitting down and experiencing what was said, truly made me believe that there is some truth in these cards and the connection that they hold. Not only did I enjoy the imagery facing me, I enjoyed the time spent. Asking the question “if he would offer this service to his viewers?”, he answered me by stating that the decks will be for sale and will come with a scheduled reading.
Even if you are not one who believes in this, the investment of roughly .52 cents a card is a treasure that no one should pass up. These particular decks are great ways to have small art in your home, and brighten up your wall if you cannot afford the larger version.
