Considered one of the best sandwiches in America, the Italian Beef is certainly hard to beat. The sandwich is made up of thin slices of seasoned roast beef, dripping with meat juices, on a dense, long Italian-style roll. The bread itself is often dipped into the juices the meat is cooked in, and topped off with Chicago-style giardiniera (called “hot”) or sauteed, green Italian sweet peppers (called “sweet”). The origins of the sandwich date back to 1938 when Al Fererri conjured it up to serve at weddings in Chicago. Meat was scarce, and the thin slices went a long way.
Over the years the Chicago family moved a tiny stand through out Little Italy, and settled at its current location, 1078 West Taylor. Al’s Italian Beef is legendary in those parts and across the states where Chicago expats compare interloping sandwich makers to their beloved original.
Local sandwiches include entries such as Jimmy’s Food Store, Old World Sausage Company, and Uncle Uber’s. It has been rumored that chef Brian Luscher will have a version at his new hot dog joint when it is built. All of these are fantastic and have drawn high praise in the media over the years.
Yesterday Dallasite Nancy Boyce who runs a local group on Facebook for Chicago expats informed craveDFW that Al’s is moving to Dallas. Addison, to be specific. We checked into the story and found that this was in fact happening, and a Al’s should be moving into an undisclosed area on Belt Line in Addison. In a matter of month’s you will be able to taste the original flavors of Chicagoland in Texas. We will keep you updated on this exciting opening.
Al’s now also sells Chicago dog, you know, laced with the neon green relish, brown mustard, sport peppers, dill and tomato slices, and a shake of celery salt.
May Ditka smile on us all.
