Where to Dine in Lake Highlands – Pt 1

VG Doubleby Joey Stewart

While much of Dallas lies flat, the northeast Dallas collection of subdivisions known as Lake Highlands offers a unexpected setting of hills, valleys, woods and streams. Most of the area is served by the Richardson Independent School District, which makes it an enticing place to live for parents who are looking for an alternative to DISD or would rather not pay to send their little ones to private schools.

However, within the LH borders it can be a challenge to find restaurants offering the variety of choices of the surrounding areas. Sure, one can head a few miles west to Preston Hollow, south to Casa Linda, or directly north of 635 for a plethora of options, but for those who wish to stay within Lake Highlands “proper,” we’ve compiled a short list for you to enjoy. Some of you may already be in the know, but we bet there are a few here you have never thought to try. We will spotlight these a few at a time, and here are today’s picks. Click on the individual photos to expand.

Resident Taqueria

This cozy neighborhood spot serves chef inspired street tacos priced at around three bucks each, and serves sides such as queso fundido, guacamole verde, and Mexican fried rice. Wash it down with your choice of beer, specialty cocktails, wine, or even mezcal.

Chef Andrew Savoie previously worked in some of the best restaurants in the U.S., and taught at the Art Institute of Dallas for almost a decade. Order at the counter, enjoy, and repeat. Tucked away in the SW corner of Audelia and Walnut Hill.

Varsity Grill

Amiable owner Thom treats everyone who walks in to his restaurant as his best friend. VG boast a huge menu of burgers, wings, salads, sandwiches, chili, seafood, and a ton of appetizers. College sports banners and several TVs decorate the place, but it’s far from a sports bar. In fact, there is no bar. BYOB. Located just southwest of Abrams and Forest.

Zato Sushi and Thai

Located in a strip mall just north of Skillman and Royal, this thirty five seat restaurant serves Japanese and Thai, Sushi, sashimi and rolls. Dollar sushi on Mondays and Tuesdays. BYOB. Head Sushi Chef Hugo will make a special roll for you if you tell him what you like. Forgot to bring wine? Walk nextdoor to Tom Thumb and grab a bottle.

Shady’s Burgers and Brewhaha

Two doors down from Resident Taqueria lies this friendly neighborhood bar and burger joint. Full bar features many local craft beers on tap and by the bottle. Specialty and “build you own” burgers, cheese fries, nachos, salads, and plenty of alternatives like tacos and chicken tenders.

Line up to order in front of the open kitchen or pony up to the u-shaped bar for full service. Happy hour Monday through Friday from 3p-7p.
