Margarita Meltdown 2019

This past Sunday, Margarita Meltdown celebrated nine years of showcasing the best of the Dallas hospitality industry’s margaritas. This year’s festival took place along Dallas’ Historic West End, where 30 of Dallas’ best restaurants and bars competed for the title of Best Margarita. Each of those one-ounce ramekins packed a powerful, unique punch, with no two samples tasting alike, however, only one would take the title of Dallas’ Best Margarita.

Margarita Meltdown was founded in 2011 by Nico Ponce, owner of Veracruz Cafe

“Margarita Meltdown is for the people,” says Ponce. “At the end of the day, it’s the customers who pay our bills and keep us in business, so we are giving them the opportunity to vote for their favorites, as opposed to a panel of judges.”

Attendees of Margarita Meltdown were allowed 30 one-ounce samples. After trying all of the samples, attendees were given a phone number and a code word from each vendor to cast their vote.

The winner of Best Margarita was the Liquid Nitrogen Margarita from Beto & Son. The Liquid Nitrogen Margarita is a frozen, Avion Reposado Tequila-based cocktail with fresh lime juice, agave, orange liquer and encapsulated fruit pearls.

In second was Peggy Sue’s BBQ, who served a Watermelon margarita, and in third was Veracruz Cafe, with their tomatillo margarita.

Overall, Margarita Meltdown was a fun experience. While the Historic West End district may have been a bit packed and crowded, and while getting to the West End may have been a pain in the ass with railway construction, the best of Dallas’ margaritas and a DJ spinning classic throwback jams made for a great afternoon.
