A Few Of Our Favorite Things At Kuby’s

The look of Kubys hasn’t changed much over the years

by Steven Doyle

Kuby’s has been a Dallas institution since 1961 creating house-made sausages, offering cured meats, a large variety of salads and fresh meats in their delicatessen. A few years back Karl Kuby  told us that he has a smoker that is massive and valued in excess of $125,000. That dedication to the craft is evident in the product they make available at their Snider Plaza location in Dallas.

A recent visit invigorated our adoration for the 57-year old restaurant and deli.

We sat down to enjoy a small luncheon last Saturday afternoon to reacquaint ourselves with the restaurant that is sometimes set aside for the more glamorous restaurants in town, but once in we were reminded that this was home. The sights, sounds and smells were instantly remembered.

Here are a few dishes we sampled that day:

The Wurst Teller (sausage plate) with homemade sauerkraut, hot German potato salad and red cabbage is definitely a highlight on the menu.

Julie Andrews may prefer her Schnitzels with noodles, but we chose potato pancakes this day to pair with our Jager Schnitzel.

A little known secret is that if you do not see what you want on the days menu, you can recall any number of sausages from the deli side of the building. So check that side out before sitting at your table. The jalapeno sausage is recommended.

The deli is packed full of any number of dried and cured as well as fresh meats that include steaks and chops cut-to-order.

Check out this old episode of Man vs Food where Kuby’s was highlighted.
