While we’re still feeling the effects of the pandemic, there is never a shortage of chicken fried steak in Texas. Times may be tough, but we still find comfort in this comfort food.
A chicken fried steak is a cut of tenderized that is battered and fried, crafted in a way to appear similar to a piece of fried chicken. It is a southern staple with a rich history in Texas. October 26th is Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day, and this year marks the sixth anniversary of the event.
“Years ago, we were brainstorming over breakfast at one of the cafes and the idea kind of just popped up,” says Ed Murph, owner of Norma’s Cafe. “We had a great team that took it all the way to Texas Legislature and in May 2011, October 26th was officially announced as Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day. Starting in 2015, we wanted to do even more and began our Chicken Fried Steak Day Bus Tour to raise money for charity and it’s continued to grow from there.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bus tour this year is cancelled, however, Norma’s will still be serving chicken fried steak at all five of their locations. The steaks will come with a mini Texas flag in each dish. If you can’t make it out to any of Norma’s locations, Murph encourages people to try a chicken fried steak at any local restaurant.
Tonight at 7 p.m. CST, the team at Norma’s has put together a virtual fundraiser for the Dallas Stars Foundation, with a live musical performance by The Bird Dogs.
