The Chicken That Makes The Coyotes Howl On The Ranch At Las Colinas

ranch5by Steven Doyle

The Ranch at Las Colinas is just that. It is like being invited to dinner at a giant hacienda, and all your friends are there. On a most recent visit I flipped out over the fried chicken, which is the most unusual and flavorful I have tasted ever. The fried chicken at Stampede is pretty remarkable, with its oozing honey pot center, but this is much different. The chicken is first smoked, then fried. If I was some sort of spiritual speaker I would take this opportunity to lean down in front of you and repeat, “smoked… then fried!” Can I get an amen?

What the chef at The Ranch does for chicken he does similar to the chicken fried steak. No, no smoking, but just delicious as the fried bird. It is a giant slab times two on a plate with a small bit of room for a vegetable.

The people who own the Ranch are the same folks that do a splendid job with Whiskey Cake, and Mexican Sugar. You may know these restaurants for their local sourcing and fantastic guidance under the leadership of kicked up chefs. They also have the knack for fantastic cocktails, wine and beer, as well as a mean selection of scotch and whiskies to go with that cigar after dinner at the Ranch. They also keep a nice humidor full of smokes that can be enjoyed on the beautiful patio.

Most nights you might find a band playing in the special bar area in the west 40 of the Ranch. This all makes for an incredible evening out on the Ranch, and the perfect spot to take your out of town guests this summer looking for a bit of Texana. Don’t forget one of the pastry selection to end the night, they do all the baking in-house including this rich chocolate cake pictured above.
