Celebrate Guacamole Day (Sept 16)

Guacamole is a fantastic Mexican food that has skyrocketed in popularity over the past few decades, so much so that it has a cult following. It’s a staple dish for vegans and the health-conscious, but really guacamole is for everyone to enjoy.

This avocado-based dish is super tasty and very versatile. You can feast on it at lunch, enjoy it as an evening snack, or add it to a fancy buffet when you have guests

Given its rich avocado content, guacamole is packed with essential nutrients. Some of the elements found in this dish are vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamins B5 and B6, omega-3 fatty acids, oleic acid, potassium, folate, iron, magnesium, zinc, and antioxidants.

Eating guacamole regularly can help you gain some of the health benefits normally associated with avocado. This super-food protects the eyesight, lowers levels of bad cholesterol and inflammation – hence protecting the heart, helps absorb other essential nutrients such as beta carotene, protects the brain against neurodegenerative diseases, and reduces oxidative stress – a naturally occurring process that can lead to numerous conditions including cancer.

Celeb chef Alton Brown proposes a straight-forward guacamole recipe based on the following ingredients: 3 Hass avocados (medium-ripe), ½ teaspoon of kosher salt, ¼ teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper, ½ cup of diced onion, ½ teaspoon of ground cumin, 1 clove of garlic, 2 diced Roma tomatoes, ½ minced jalapeno, 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped cilantro, 1 tablespoon of lime juice. Rough mash and enjoy.

In Dallas we enjoy the guac at Miriam Cocina Latina, Rafa’s Cafe Mexicano, Javier’s Gourmet Mexicano and Matt’s Rancho Martinez.
