When in Austin…Conan’s Pizza

by Robert Bostick
Driving South on IH-35 the conversation turned to what eats to get once hitting Austin city limits, and there was no question it would be Conan’s Pizza.  We have a long history with Conan’s; my wife remembers her childhood afternoons after a softball game with her family, and my late night conversations with  friends over a pitcher of Shiner and brief employment there.  Continue reading

Joie de Vivre: Uchi is Opening in Dallas

by Robyn Folmar

I was in Austin this weekend for the Texas Monthly BBQ Festival and couldn’t pass up an opportunity to finally try Uchi

The sake apparently went straight to my husband’s head because he insisted on the ten-course Chef’s tasting menu. Normally this tough guy dry heaves at the very thought of eating Aquaman’s sea friends. His principles were quickly jettisoned as we fought over the last raw oyster with honeycrisp apple sorbet and wasabi foam.     Continue reading

Texas Monthly BBQ Festival 2012

by Robyn Folmar

Sunday was the 3rd annual Texas Monthly BBQ Festival in Austin. The event was packed, the weather was hot and there was more Q than any person with only one stomach could comfortably put down.

The best BBQ joints in the state were invited to serve more than 3,000 excited and sweaty meat fanatics at the beautiful Long Center for the Performing Arts.  Although the event was crowded, the festival was well laid out with plenty of shade, seating, Shiner and clean, honest-to-God bathrooms.      Continue reading

May Roundup: The House on the Hill

by Dr. Spin

After an evening of karaoke at The Highball, we found ourselves stranded at our friend’s house by a violent thunderstorm. Somehow, our children all slept through the maelstrom while we watched the storm roll in over the hill country with respectful awe, an awe that gave way to intimidation as the lightning struck the cell towers around us. It was another one of those unexpected bonding experiences that strengthened our long friendship with this couple.

We slept in their guest bed that night, and when we woke up in the morning I rolled over to my wife and said, quite matter-of-factly, “let’s move out here.” As the Little One grows increasingly active, it is becoming more and more obvious that she is going to need her own space before we decide on our PhD research agendas. In addition to getting into a nice community with reasonably sized lots, this seemingly straightforward decision also offered the opportunity to be close to our friends and their own little one, who is less than a month older than ours. go up the hill to the Pharmacy

M83 Live: Floating Above Stubb’s

by Dr. Spin

All of the video footage that I have ever seen of M83 indicated that their live performances matched their epic recordings, earning them a place on my bucket list of “bands to see.” M83 has come to town three times since Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming came out last year, though, and each time, tickets were snatched up within hours. Since I have a profound issue with supporting the ticket scalping industry, I missed them. As this pattern repeated, I was becoming increasingly concerned that I would miss out on this tour. Fortunately, my wife’s principles are not nearly so limiting, so I was pleasantly surprised when she told me that she had gotten us some tickets. I was ecstatic.  Let the date night commence!  float on over to the Pharmacy…
