Want To Own A Food Truck? We Tell You How

by Steven Doyle

This week we spent an afternoon mulling over food trucks in the Arts District of Dallas.  The many trucks lined up to sell their tacos, sliders and baked potatoes, and with the unseasonably beautiful weather hoards of people crept from the towers of downtown to enjoy a leisurely stroll and a fond repast.

We were joined by Natalie Roffino of US Food Trucks who has played a great role in the Dallas culinary scene for some time now. She has been the junior director for the Texas Chef’s Association for the past three years.     Continue reading

First Look: Chop House Burger

by Steven Doyle

I would recognize that bun anywhere. The soft but toasty brioche smacks of the flavorful Empire Bakery as any decent chef-driven burger should.  I did a late night drop in to take a bite out of the new Chop House Burger which just opened but a few days ago. I was downtown most of yesterday afternoon, but a drive-by made me skittish with the hoards of people pouring out of the new burger joint.    Continue reading

First Look: Off-Site Kitchen

by Steven Doyle

Nick Badovinus has a terrific sense of humor, and it’s on display now at his newly opened Off-Site Kitchen located at Irving Blvd and Wycliff.  The restaurant looks as if it has been in operation for years and his menu is dotted with plays on our childhood that will beckon a return visit.

You will understand when you hear about some of the fun items on the menu such as the Crunchy Sloppy Taco which Badovinus said is his sleeper dish that made its way to the menu quite by accident.  In the final days prior to opening they were editing the menu and they decided to merge a large crunchy taco with a Sloppy Joe.  It works just fine for me, and makes a bad ass side item to accompany your burger.    Continue reading

First Look: Union Bear Opens Today

by Steven Doyle

Yesterday we checked out the Union Bear which swings open its doors today in the West Village on McKinney Avenue in Uptown Dallas. We spoke with both owner Matt Spiller and chef John Kleifgen on our visit and sat down to try some of the food being offered up to their eager patrons.

When walking into Union Bear you will notice that like all of the Spiller operations it fits beautifully with the existing neighborhood architecture. They were not trying to recreate a previous motif like you might find at Eno’s or Oddfellows.   Continue reading

Bar and Book Opens at Lonestar

by Katie Minchew

Bar & Book. I’m going to get right down to business. Bar & Book has some good food! And they have some… inventive food–I will give them that much for sure. The most inventive item on the list was our first to test: Fat Elvis Fries. Oh yes, Elvis fries. Wondering what they are? Sweet potato fries covered in peanut butter sauce, chopped peppered bacon, and dried banana chips. It was not my favorite dish of the night, but I was so intrigued that I kept on munching, trying to sift out the different flavors that I couldn’t quite believe they combined in one dish. Elvis must have had a more adventurous pallet than mine.

After doing a lap around the awesome new 3 million dollar building, my dinner companion and I found a comfy little table looking down on the spacious bar, eager to accept the dozens of dishes being passed by the smiling waitresses.   Continue reading

Patrick Henry Would’ve Loved Liberty Burger

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

When your paterfamilias is the legendary Gene Street who brought us such restaurants as Black Eyed Pea, Good Eats and Lucky’s, you will be forever put on notice should you ever attempt to succeed in the same industry. As the rumors turned into reality the young and insightful Mariel Street succeeded as she and her siblings opened what we are sure is just the first Liberty Burger.

Far from fast food, the burger-only restaurant is splashy and delectable. When ordering your Liberty Burger it is important to realize that all the ingredients are of the fresh-n-local variety, as is the beautifully baked bun from Empire Baking Company which is the tie that binds.            Continue reading

Where to Watch the Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas

by Steven Doyle

The Cotton Bowl Classic is a legendary game in these parts starting in 1937 when the TCU Horned Frogs stomped the Golden Eagle’s of Marquette 16-6. This was the beginning of a sweet Texas tradition. Today the latest chapter in the Classic is being played in the beautiful confines in Arlington at Cowboy’s Stadium. Gone are the cold and windy seats on the concrete.

If you haven’t scored a ticket for the game tonight between the K State Wildcats and the Arkansas Razorbacks we have a few suggestions where you might want to watch the game. Check out our list and suggest a few of your own.    Continue reading
