A Special Benefit at Zen Bistro and Dessert Bar

by Steven Doyle

Last March I had the pleasure to meet two very fine women who started a bakery in Deep Ellum. I first met their father outside their yet-to-open shop as I was racing across town on foot and noticed the man painting the walls out  front of what would become Zen Bistro & Dessert Bar. He invited me in for a chat and quickly scribbled down their names and cell phone numbers. He was excited for me to chat with his daughters.

Just days later I met both Chonnie Richey and Czarina Hounsel, two women devoted to their families, to their business and to each other. They are also so very involved in their community, devoting their time and profits to helping others.

Ironically, one of the charities they have supported through out the time they have been in operation is Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.       Continue reading

With a sustainable, farm to table product focus Sharon will prepare a once-in-a-lifetime meal for 30 people each of the two evenings. Happy Anniversary Cane Rosso

by Steven Doyle

We have been following Cane Rosso’s Jay Jerrier since his early days when he was subletting the space at Preston-Forest. He only had his mobile oven back then and made his pizza in the parking lot a few days a week. His product has come a long way since then, and he has enjoyed the adoration of all media.

His Neapolitan pizza is about as authentic as you will get in the country and sports that feather-light crust with slight marks from the heat of the oven and superior toppings. I think it is also fair to pronounce Jerrier “The King of all Media” as he is not camera shy and spends a good amount of his day working the social aspects with FaceBook and Twitter.        Continue reading

Check Out the Latest Pop-Up Bar Hid In 2612

by Steven Doyle

This past weekend we checked out the new pop-up Hid In 2612 cocktail lounge in Deep Ellum hosted by Michael Martensen of Cedars Social and Brian McCullough of the soon-to-open Standard Pour in the new space that Cane Rosso’s Jay Jerrier happily donated. The proceeds will benefit the Deep Ellum Community Association.

The décor of the tiny space is fun and spirited with much of the furnishings coming from Again & Again diva Leslie Pritchard and the design gurus at KingZuluBong.     Continue reading

Hid In 2612 The New Bar 828

by Steven Doyle

Jay Jerrier slipped a little information to Scott Reitz over at the Observer and explained his new “dough room”. You can read all about that at this link.

While I was in the ER I didn’t notice that I had a little email slipped to me as well. It explained the Hid In 2612 that Jerrier is hosting in the same dough room. Scott has most of the facts about the second run of what was formerly called Bar 828  in Oak Cliff. We have a little bit more information. Continue reading

Chicken and Waffle Taco at La Grange

One of the big things we are starting to see on menus are the unconventional sandwiches and tacos. The trend holds true with the taco-makers at La Grange in Deep Ellum.   Continue reading

2012 Dive Bar Tour Rolls Through Dallas

by Steven Doyle     photos by Robert Bostick

Planning the latest Dallas Bus Tour was a blast. Previous editions included tours that explored Tacos, Pizza, Burgers, and even vegan food in Dallas. The trick behind a successful tour I am finding is not to over think the process. Load up 25 adults onto a bus full of beer, wine and cocktails and point them in any direction and they will have fun.

Such is the case for the latest tour which explored dive bars of Dallas. Now here might be the rub for some, what exactly is a dive bar? I have my definition, you have yours. However, for the first tour exploring almost only alcohol I wanted to play it safe. No stabbings, no arrests, no crying.            Continue reading
