Captain Hope’s Kids Chili Cook-Off Was A Bit Unusual

by Steven Doyle

Since 1994 Captain Hope’s Kids has been meeting the needs of homeless children in critical need of basic necessities. On any given night in North Texas, more than 1,100 children will fall asleep in homeless and domestic violence shelters. Sixty-six percent will be under the age of nine and thirty-one percent are infants and toddlers under the age three years.

Earlier this week I was honored to judge a chili cook-off that benefitted Captain Hope. I judge many of these types of functions and was expecting this event to be pretty much the same as any other. I was in for a bit of a surprise.    Continue reading

A Chat with Kenny Bowers

by Steven Doyle           photos by Robert Bostick

We hooked up with Kenny Bowers, owner of Kenny’s Wood Fired Grill in Addison, Kenny’s Burger Joint in Frisco and for the past year Kenny’s Italian Kitchen, also in Addison.

Bowers is an engaging person who is excited about what he does for a living. He lives for food and restaurants, and it is with this passion that has carried him successfully through out his tenure in ownership. Bowers also walks the edge a bit, but that goes along with the personality that can work the outrageous hours that he does and still maintain control over each of his locations.

We enjoyed our conversation with chef Bowers and hope you do as well. This month marks the one-year anniversary for the Italian Kitchen and the six year anniversary for the Wood Fired Grill.   Continue reading

Flip You for Dinner

by Steven Doyle

These are times of strange yet imaginative restaurant promotions. In recent months we have seen owners give away food freely to the public, feature half priced menus, and now this little bit of intrigue from Social House Addison, located at 5100 Belt Line. The price of your dinner is determined on a coin toss.

Flip for Food Mondays starts today, November 7 at The Social House in Addison. Patrons can come in, eat to their hearts content, and- if they win the coin toss- pay for only alcohol and gratuity.    Continue reading

Opera Lucia Meets Restaurant Lucia

by Steven Doyle

Attending the opening night of Lucia di Lammermoor was quite an experience. The Dallas Opera was gracious enough to show the live performance under the stars at no charge on a very large screen with pretty awesome fidelity. However if you were fortunate enough to have an actual seat for that evening you would have been rubbing elbows with gents in top hats and their sexy escorts donning incredible jewels and gowns.

For an opera night in Dallas the evening was a bit more snazzy than usual,  whispered several Winspear employees as they escorted us to our seats. Typical nights are more relaxed, and the TDO seems to be going through a concerted effort to cater to all walks of life interested in great music.   Continue reading
