The Deep Ellum Art Walk was this past Saturday, no fussy after parties or special guest stars were advertised — only 18 of the best Deep Ellum has to offer. Kettle Art, the epicenter of the event, displayed a serene selection of work by Frank and Amber Campagna, but didn’t seem to draw the crowds it did last year. Continue reading

Tonight: Deschutes Beer and Food Pairing at Libertine
Check out the Libertine tonight at 7pm for a very special guided Deschutes beer and food sampling with guest brewer Robin Johnson. For just $20 you can enjoy 3 Deschutes beers with a very special paired food sampling.
Mirror Pond Pale Ale will be paired with Mussels in corn stock. This is base camp where any craft brew exploration begins. A distinct hop nose and hop-forward flavor make Mirror Pond the quintessential Pale Ale. It is aromatically complex, multi-layered, and unmistakably “right.”
Obsidian Stout will be paired with Venison chili. Deep, robust and richly rewarding. This is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness. Continue reading

Vegan Girl Goes to Black Friar Pub
All of the talk about the fried vegan Reuben sandwich contest for the upcoming Texas Veggie State Fair got me craving a Reuben, but not deep fried. I had two issues: 1. I want it now and not in October and 2. I didn’t want to cook it myself. How many options are out there in Dallas restaurants? Not too many, but I found one at Black Friar Pub on McKinney Ave that fit the bill.
Normally, I hit Black Friar for serious beer drinking with the guys AFTER dinner. This night I decided to try out the food options WHILE drinking. Continue reading

Budin Azteca de Camaron at MesoMaya
Growing up 5 miles from the Mexican border, I like to think of myself as someone who knows and appreciates good Mexican food so when I got the call to cover the press dinner at the recently opened MesoMaya at Preston and Forest, I jumped at the chance. Any chance to taste Mexican food that is not from a chain, I am a go. So a quick jaunt over to Dallas to see what MesoMaya has to offer.
One of the more interesting features of MesoMaya is the indoor patio that has windows that can be raised to make the restaurant have an open feel. This will be wonderful when this weather finally breaks and fall begins and tonight was a good example of how open the restaurant could feel. After walking in, I was greeted with a very good strawberry serrano margarita. It was a sweet heat from the muddled fruits paired nicely with the tequila and lime. A great way to start a meal. One Art in Commissary Opens Tonight
Today marks the opening of The Commissary’s restaurant-within-a-restaurant One Art. We were fortunate to be part of the few to preview some of the offerings that the new restaurant will offer and will share the photos below.
It is interesting to note that unlike the One Art predecessor, The Table, there will be a few changes. One notable change is price. Chef-owner John Tesar noted last evening that the all night multi-course room wasn’t as successful due to the economy, and scaled the menu back by lowering price points, offering an ala carte menu, and sticking to more basic ingredients rather than the foie and caviar heavy approach he had before.
