Drink of the Week: Marquee

by Steven Doyle

We sauntered into the sexy surroundings of Highland Park Village’s Marquee Grill and Bar last night in search of a fantastic cocktail and entered the realm of celeb bartender Jason Kosmas who is the beverage director of the restaurant, only to find he has slipped away on vacation.

This did not deter our thirsty selves, so we quickly bellied up to the bar where we ordered. And for good measure, ordered again.   Continue reading

Dallas Diva Does Fashion Week

by Farah Fleurima

Fashion’s Night Out, Thursday night’s kickoff to New York Fashion Week, had the city’s top fashion destinations buzzing with parties galore — to say that it was a blast is seriously understating things. Here, my exploits for the evening.

I started off at Galleria Dallas, following my own FNO itinerary and checking out the happy hour at Banana Republic. Guess I can call it a “so-called” happy hour — the store’s version of happy meant 40 percent off most merchandise, which is great, but … where’s the OBS (open bar situation), yo? On to the next. My partier in crime Dimples and I wanted to find the Fashionistas’ champagne lounge.     Continue reading

Cocktail of the Week: The Heirloom At Asador

by Steven Doyle

“The Heirloom” which is a variation of the Bloody Mary, was recently added to the cocktail menu at Asador at the Renaissance Hotel next to Market Hall. What makes this cocktail so unique is that it is deconstructed in  the sense that a traditional Bloody Mary has the ingredients all blended together, this cocktail separates the flavor profiles and presents them on their own. For example, with a traditional Bloody Mary the tomatoes are pureed, but in this version they leave them whole, which still lends the flavor and allows them to be seen in their entirety.     Continue reading

Celebrate Your Labor Day in Dallas

by Steven Doyle

Summer is coming to close, but you really wouldn’t notice by the temperatures outside. Perhaps the only indication that Fall is fast approaching are all the blinking school zone signs and talk of the Texas State Fair and all their fried offerings.

Alas, there is one last summer hurrah with a three-day weekend and we want to add to your growing list of pool parties and lake jaunts in case you wanted something different to do. Celebrate with us:    Continue reading

Best Sandwich in Dallas Today

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

One of the absolute best things that I have eaten in months is made by bad-boy chef John Tesar of The Commissary. The Commissary makes a great option for those in the Arts District wanting a late night nosh and is one of the most solid values found in downtown Dallas. There you can find a chef-driven five dollar burger that satisfies and lifts the spirits.

Recently I found an item on Tesar’s special board that I probably would not have necessarily ordered had sommelier Scott Barber not insisted I try the sandwich. He stood next to me and said, “Seriously… order the Pork Belly BLT. Seriously.”  Continue reading

Vegan Girl: Sushi Zushi

by Melissa Brenner

Thursday, September 1st, Sushi Zushi rolls out its vegan menu in the Dallas locations.

While a raw fish place seems about as likely to care about vegan options on the menu as an almost raw steak place, accommodation of all types of dietary needs is growing. This is something I’m happy to see, as most of my omni friends are sushi freaks. I, myself, am a sucker for the seaweed salad and an Asahi Super Dry, but I’d also like to be able to enjoy something more substantial at dinner.

Sushi Zushi has created separate menu pages for vegan options, rather than just notating with a leaf or something, which makes it much easier to peruse the offerings. The vegan page lists the special instructions to give your server in order to veganize the standard items. Happily, the menu also lists the sauces that are vegan (this list includes eel sauce, which makes me a happy girl).   Continue reading

A Fish and Two Goats, Or Why Strangeways is Aptly Named

by Steven Doyle

Last night I was out with a friend for dinner and we decided on Tei-Tei Robata Bar for a little relaxed sushi and sake action. Dinner was sparkling and we even happened to see former Tei-Tei owner and current Tei-An chef-owner Teiich sitting alone at the corner of the bar perusing the menu.

After a few rounds of sushi we thought to have a cocktail and happened into Strangeways, the new brew hall on Fitzhugh very near the new Herrera’s and Red Fork. The new bar is owned by Eric and Erica Sanchez and it is their foray into the hospitality business. The bar is festooned with interesting Mexican artifacts and loaded with plenty of  beers on tap and over 100 bottled. A great selection.    Continue reading
