One Monday night per month, Executive Chef Tre Wilcox and Executive Bar Manager Jason Kosmas will combine efforts by presenting a unique menu that is sure to delight the palate of those willing to be a bit more creative in their dining experience.   Continue reading

The New Faces at Bolsa

by Steven Doyle

Last evening I found myself marching into Bolsa for their weekly cocktail challenge where they ask their Facebook friends to suggest ingredients. I always suggest “a duck” in the same voice of Arthur Pendragon as portrayed in Monty Python’s Holy Grail, but have yet to see this make it to the menu. There is always hope.

The challenge is simple, the boys behind the bar at Bolsa cull suggestions for a single spirit each week and draw the ideas from a hat. Literally a hat that was most likely made at House of MacGregor, the haberdashery located in the tiny showroom above the Oak Cliff restaurant. From a list of five ingredients the bartenders whip up five cocktails and offer each of them on Wednesdays for an even five bucks. It’s a great program.     Continue reading

“To Life” with Charles Smith

by Adam Sachs

It was the first time I had seen my friend Kevin since April, when we were at a house party hosted by Pioneer Wine Company and Charles Smith Wines. This time we found each other at the same house for a an after-party for Pioneer’s portfolio tasting. I reminded him about the night before I flew to Walla Walla, Washington and saw Charles Smith’s newly opened downtown tasting room.     Continue reading

Celebrate Tomatina at Samar

by Steven Doyle

The last Wednesday of August in the Valencia town of Buñol in Spain they hold a festival each year that started in 1944 as a small rivalry discouraged by police, but since the 1950’s has been openly accepted. You may have seen photographs of Tomatina, the largest tomato fight in the world.

Each year the tomato fight swells to larger proportions as the local government began trucking in low quality tomatoes grown for the festival in the 1980’s, replacing the homegrown tomatoes gathered by the people of Buñol.   Continue reading

Club Clearview Reunites for a Night

by Steven Doyle

What started as renegade parties in Deep Ellum  warehouses with cohorts in crime Jeff Swaney, Steve Clohessy, Jeffrey Yarbrough and Mark Cuban who would set up under the lights fueled by generators and selling beer for the price of admission, soon became a legitimate enterprise that led to the opening of Club Clearview in an abandoned curtain warehouse.

The multi-venue club quickly became the heart of Deep Ellum’s music scene in the 80’s and 90’s, hosting national acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ministry, as well as birthing locals such as Vanilla Ice and the Dixie Chicks.

The musical Mecca comprised of Club Clearview, Art Bar, Blind Lemon, The Red Room, and Open the Roof Deck. There revelers could enjoy their own form of party, traveling between the venues with their sole connective tissue, a room filled of nearly nude neon clad dancers in cages.   Continue reading

Meet Free Man Owner

by Steven Doyle

We paid a visit to John Jay Myers, owner of The Free Man  in Deep Ellum, to check out the menu and feel for the new restaurant that is having their grand opening tonight.

As we approached the Cajun restaurant that is located at 2626 Commerce we were met by Myers himself who was greeting people as they passed by. Inside the place was packed, possibly due to the fact he was giving away free beer since the liquor license wasn’t fully in place. We understand licensing came just in time for today and Free Man should be lively.   Continue reading

Gilt City Launches, Fosters More Cravings with Foster the People

by Adam Sachs      photos courtesy of Rebecca Lorrine Photography

A large city such as Dallas inevitably carries the clichéd paradox of letting me feel lost amongst a crowd of people when I go out. It was thus with definite curiosity that I accepted an invitation to check out the Gilt City Dallas Launch Party at House of Blues on Wednesday evening, featuring a live performance by Los Angeles’ Foster the People.

It was an exclusive party for members of Gilt City, not to mention that Foster the People have already played a few sold-out shows in Dallas. The scene was predictable at the House of Blues, a venue that cannot seem to recover from its poor acoustics, but nonetheless an iconic staple that can solidify any band’s reputation in this city.     Continue reading
