Matetic Vineyards – Non-Everyday Wines at Everyday Prices

Jorge Bastiasby Andrew Chalk

Jorge Matetic, a fifth generation Chilean of Croatian descent took at least two brave moves in 1999. First he decided to diversify his family’s business interests from such prosaic essentials as fence wire into wine production. Second, he decided to plant vineyards in the area of Casablanca, far off the beaten track of the country’s lush Valle Centrale. He bought no less than 46,000 acres.

To put that into perspective it is roughly half the total vineyard area of the whole of New Zealand. Mercifully for the price of Chilean wine, only about 300 acres are planted to vines. The rest are woods, crops and sheep pasture.  Since those frontier days, the Casablanca region has become quite a popular viticultural area and is being recognized as the site of distinctive Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.          Continue reading

Is Zinfandel A First-Class Varietal?

Post destruction. The wines we tastedby Andrew Chalk

I first encountered Zinfandel as a student when I tasted Ridge Vineyards ‘California Coast Range’ Zinfandel for what was, for an impoverished graduate student, a king’s ransom of $6.99. It is no longer made, but that wine engaged me to hunt out Zinfandel:  a fruity, forward, red wines that offered a (usually) lower-priced alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. I did not know at the time that Zinfandel was an almost universally scorned blending grape that was the backbone of such headache-inducing abominations as Gallo Hearty Burgundy.  Continue reading

15_2013_06_Winposte-116

By Andrew Chalk     photos by Robert Bostick

This weekend in a tasting at WinePoste.com Texas Viognier soundly trounced California and French wines made from the Viognier grape. The judges were professional sommeliers from Dallas restaurants including The Pyramid Room, The Dallas Country Club, The Gaylord Texan, Sēr at The Hilton Anatole and Kitchen LTO among others. All of the wines were tasted blind (i.e. nobody knew the identity of the wines – they were in numbered brown bags). The wines were not just a sample, but every Continue reading

For reasons we don’t fully understand, Dallas is packed with interesting wine and food events in the next three weeks. Things could be worse. We could all be on the ‘Pyongyang Diet’. Here is a summary of some of the most interesting press releases that came across my (virtual) desk:   Continue reading

96˚ West Winery Featuring Local Chefs At Wine Club Dinners Each Month

DSC07952by Steven Doyle

Recently I was invited to assist chef Eric Shelton at a special dinner in Wylie, Texas, where the chef lives. You can find Shelton at any of the Dallas Summer Musicals where he is the head toque, but this evening he was hosting the dinner at the 96˚ West Winery. The winery in Wylie often rotate guest chefs to come in and take over the kitchen, and it was an honor to work with Shelton who is bright and spirited. The attitude shines through in his dishes.

This particular evening Shelton created some unusual platings such as a delicious eggplant cannoli, and more subtle tastings like his quail dish which guests quickly devoured.   Continue reading
