Friday’s Five Fabulous Food Finds

by Steven Doyle

Each week we scour the city in search of the very best Dallas has to offer. We check into restaurants both old and new looking for interesting food to discuss with you so you can make handy decision when dining out.

We do not necessarily write up each item we enjoy, and often have photos that we will save for another week. However, we will share some of the most awe-inspiring dishes on Friday in what we like to call Friday’s Five Fabulous Food Finds.    Continue reading

Boulevardier Elevates The Beignet

by Steven Doyle

It’s deep fried choux paste. It’s basically a donut but so much more worth the calories that are at stake. The lighter-than-air ethereal dough balls are a perfect start to a day, or the end of a fantastic meal. The beignet is as versatile as it is delicious.

Last evening I happened into Boulevardier for a small bite and to try a few items on the new restaurants menu. Sitting at the bar I zeroed in on a few items that screamed out “eat me”. So I did.             Continue reading

Astra’s “The Black Chord:” Thin Lines and Broad Palates

by Dr. Spin

Initially, it wasn’t Astra’s sound that put them on my radar – it was the pale blue landscape from the cover of The Weirding. It looked like a Roger Dean landscape that had burned to the ground, and I couldn’t resist checking it out. When it finally made it into rotation, I consistently enjoyed its idiosyncratic mellotron-drenched approach to retro-prog. Overall, however, it was a bit overlong, oblique, and, unfortunately, it fell through the cracks in the long term.

Still, Astra presented themselves as the kind of adventurous underground group that I like to adopt and promote… adopt an adventurous promotion over at thePharmacy.

Beat The Heat Contest At Hypnotic

by Steven Doyle

You must give the folks at Hypnotic some props. They know how to promote their product well and they make a mean donut. Today we are sent word that they are hosting a donut eating contest, but with a kick.

To win this contest you need to eat the most donuts in 10 minutes, but there is a catch. As each donut is presented to the contestant it gets spicier and spicier – to the point of extreme. The winner receives the distinction of being the first to win the inaugural competition and a free Mexico donut each week through the end of 2012.   Continue reading
