The weather forecast calls for the possibility of freezing rain in North Texas. Time to hunker down to a fine bowl of soup, either at home, or out and about for the brave. Either way, we’ve got you covered.

Tortilla Soup simply screams Dallas, and the king of the Tortilla Soup is none other than Dean Fearing who picked up the task while serving as Mess Sergeant at The Mansion on Turtle Creek.  We have witnessed the making of this soup, and let’s just say it is far easier to mosey into the Ritz-Carlton than actually produce the soup yourself. But what if we are playing solo for the big night? Don’t play into the hype and feel you need to hunt a date, we have you covered for a perfectly acceptable night on the town with no regrets. Don’t stay at home, get out there and enjoy. It is always fun to people watch, especially the couple who just met for the first time from Match.com.

Reservations of tables for one are up 62 percent nationally over the past two years, according to OpenTable’s analysis of its online reservations. That makes it the fastest-growing party size, if one person could indeed be considered a party, the company said.  Continue reading

Chef Owner Thanh Nguyen Has Opened a Second Oishii

This week, Dallas’ favorite neighborhood sushi restaurant, Oishii has opened a second location. “Oishii Boulevard” is situated at 5627 SMU Boulevard and is helmed by Chef Nguyen’s talented nephew, Chef Partner Tri Tran. Tri has honed his craft at Oishii, Uchi, and Nobu restaurants. Restaurant operations are led by General Manager Brian Huynh, an Advanced Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, who has worked at the Mansion on Turtle Creek and Gemma. Continue reading

Oishii In Dallas For Lunch Today

There are certain surprises that we stumble across each day, if we are so lucky. Today was one of those days. I had a rare lunch with a really sweet friend and she chose Oishii on Wycliff in Dallas that is located in the shopping center between the Tollway and Maple.  I enjoy my trips to this restaurant, as the menu is vast enough to keep me excited.

We sat at the sushi bar this afternoon catching up on the latest news of the day and she was thumbing through the sushi and sashimi choices. I was looking through the menu fast and furious as I had something particular on my mind for lunch. It was at that moment we both looked up from our menus and said nearly simultaneously — soft shell crab. She said they had the best in town, and I just happened to have a hankering for crab (per usual).    Continue reading

The Reason Why Everybody Loves Oishii

It doesn’t take but a few visits to Oishii before you are embraced as a regular not only by the owner, Thanh Nguyen, but by the entire staff. This is one reason why so many mourned when the fusion sushi restaurant took on major fire damage in December of 2012. The food also plays a major role in making this one of the premier neighborhood restaurants since it opened nearly a dozen years ago.  Continue reading
