Review: Crown Royal XR

Gregor Cattanach the Senior National Master of Whisky (a title I’d love to hold) for Diageo was giving a presentation Monday night at the Sigels Elite on Fitzhugh about Crown Royal and it’s varying expressions. It cost $30 and was worth every penny. Below are my impressions of the Crown Royal line up.

Crown Royal Deluxe taste like whiskey (Surprise!). After rolling the dram around in my mouth, other flavors did come to light: sweet, caramel and mixed spice. It wasn’t a bad experience, but it didn’t blow my mind. Crown is walking a fine line between subtle and boring. I haven’t decided which side of that line it’s on yet. Continue reading →

Sigel’s Benchmark Pinot Noir Tasting: What We Discovered

Sigel’s held their annual Benchmark Pinot Noir Tasting this week. Fifty Pinot Noirs from California, Oregon, Burgundy, Argentina and New Zealand went head-to-head in a sell-out event at The Park City Club. CraveDFW was there and we discovered several interesting things.

Sigel’s Addison Hosts Master Scotch Ambassador Simon Brooking For Tasting

The tasting below comes Crave Recommended for one reason above all else: If you have an interest in scotch (or whisk(e)y generally) you have probably heard that the whiskies from Islay are very distinctive. They are often described as being smoky with notes of iodine, salt and peat. All of that is true and Sigel’s Wednesday tasting will be a master class in demonstrating it.

Courvoisier Gold

Spirits marketers have no doubt noticed how Moscato has taken the wine world by storm and it seems that Courvoisier has beaten them all to the punch with the release this month of Courvoisier Gold, a Moscato and Cognac liqueur.

Rich amber in color, the nose is redolent of orange zest, lime blossom, honeysuckle, turbinado sugar and vanilla. Pleasantly sweet on the palate it features loads of fresh tropical tangerine, guava and lime fruit flavors, expressive floral notes of jasmine, citrus and ginger, rounded out with layers of crème caramel, honey and sandalwood. Killer Zin from Armida Cellars

Armida Cellars in Dry Creek has hit just such a home run with the first release of their Poizin Zinfandel California 2011. This Zinfandel (80%) and Petite Verdot (20%) blend sports juicy, jammy plum, bing cherry and spice aromas that jump from the glass and attack the palate with complex layers of opulent fruit, peppercorn spiciness and sweet vanilla oak.
