Texas’ Most Famous Gas Station Chicken Fried Steak

Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day is Monday, October 26, and if you want to celebrate it properly, consider a road trip to a convenience store in Belton. The woman behind one of the most talked-about chicken fried steaks in Texas has a secret, and it is a good one. She does not eat it.

Ailehs Gaines owns Expo Quik Stop, a family-run gas station and convenience store at 308 W. Loop 121, about two hours south of Dallas on Interstate 35. We told you about its chicken fried steak back in July. Since then the legend has only grown, and in a new profile in NACS Magazine, the convenience store industry’s trade publication, Gaines revealed the twist. She is a vegetarian.

Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day Is October 26. Here Is Where to Start

Monday, October 26, is Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day, and yes, it is official. In 2011 the Texas House of Representatives passed House Resolution 1419, sponsored by state Rep. Ralph Sheffield of Temple, recognizing the date. The push came from Dallas hospitality veteran Jeffrey Yarbrough and singer Jimmy Baldwin, who figured a state that has a holiday for nearly everything ought to have one for its signature plate. The resolution notes that restaurants were already celebrating the second annual observance that fall, so the tradition actually started in 2010.

Jake and Dorothy’s is a Blast of Cowboy Past

Stephenville was founded in 1854 and is known as the Cowboy Capital of the World and in the one-hundred Best Small Towns in America list as well as Dairy Capital of Texas. With that combination, there is sure to be some good eating in Stephenville.

The town was incorporated in 1889 with the advent of Ft. Worth, Texas and Rio Grande Railway. From there Stephenville exploded with growth and buildings along with John Tarleton Ag. College, now known as Tarleton State University. Stephenville boasts more cowboys per capita than any other city in the country.

Chicken Fried Steak Day at Norma’s Goes Virtual

While we’re still feeling the effects of the pandemic, there is never a shortage of chicken fried steak in Texas. Times may be tough, but we still find comfort in this comfort food.

A chicken fried steak is a cut of tenderized that is battered and fried, crafted in a way to appear similar to a piece of fried chicken. It is a southern staple with a rich history in Texas. October 26th is Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day, and this year marks the sixth anniversary of the event.
