Jumpin’ on the Ship to Roll

We have all been amazed by the talents of an Itamae (sushi chef) and wonder how they make the beautiful yummy rolls of deliciousness.  My curiosity has been mounting since I first tried sushi years ago especially how the rolls get rolled and look so pretty.  So when Black Ship Little Katana offered the opportunity to make their signature roll “Katana 101,” I said, “はい、お願いします (yes please)!”

When I arrived at Black Ship which is located downtown Dallas at the Omni Hotel, I was promptly greeted by Vice President Kenneth Choe and he presented me with the traditional sushi chef coat (thank goodness it matched my outfit).  Before I had put on the jacket, I was a bit nervous but once the jacket slid on and I tied the sashes, I became empowered and ready to roll.  But first, I had to wash my hands.  Continue reading

Cafe Herrera Serves Up Wild Game Menu

Cafe Herrera has been a Dallas institution for so many years as one of the proudest Tex Mex families, opening its first location in 1971 on Maple Avenue where you will find the iconic bar, The Grapevine. Since opening, the great grandmother and matriarch of operations retired (and since passed away) but not before issuing the various restaurants to family members.

Gil Bonifaz grew up at the knees of his great grandmother learning the restaurant business by washing dishes and eventually owning an incarnation of the family restaurant himself. It was Gil who was operating the location on Denton Drive that closed last year after losing his lease, but like a phoenix he made rise and now operates the gem of the family located at the downtown Dallas Omni Hotel.   Continue reading
