Okrapalooza 2014 Recap

Okrapalooza was a tasty hit this past Sunday as many chefs and home cooks gathered to create the most interesting use of okra ever thought possible. From the sweet to the savory, these kitchen masters made their favorite okra dishes to benefit the Promise of Peace Garden. Promise of Peace offers neighborhood children classes in horticulture, summer camp and education in nutrition through their community garden.  They also provide opportunities for families to access a better life through participating in our cooking and gardening classes and other events.

This year’s event was by far the most successful than in past years with serious chefs rallying for the cause. Chef Thomas Archer from 3015 and his sous chefs team “Okra Winfrey” took first place this year. It was a difficult event to challenge with so many imaginative entries. 2014 Okrapalooza Benefits Promise of Peace Garden

In it’s 5th year Okrapalooza continues to bring East Dallas a unique okra cook-off with live music, beer, and specialty okra dishes. Celebrity chefs and Home-Cooks come together in the Dallas Fort Worth area to present their best okra dishes to compete for the title of Okrapalooza champion of the world. Tickets are $35.00 and include okra dish tastings and sides, beer provided by local breweries, and live music.   Continue reading

Promise of Peace Garden Dinner This Sunday

The Promise of Peace Garden is raising money to fund a new program where youth on probation in Dallas County will receive 12 weeks of unique training in life skills, career pathways and garden to table culinary experiences. Dinner will consist of four courses prepared by local chefs Sharon Van Meter of 3015, Graham Dodds of Hibiscus, Justin Box, and Ryan Barnett of Green Grocers. The dinner will be accompanied by wine from Oak Cliff Cellars, and guests will walk away with a newly created P.O.P. Garden Rosemary Delight by Dr Sue’s Chocolate.   Continue reading

Claws for a Cause

A fantastic event is coming up very soon to benefit our friends at Promise of Peace community garden in East Dallas. Amberjax in Trinity Groves is hosting a crab boil Monday, May 19th from 6 to 9pm.  The $60 price tag wholly benefits the garden, and includes appetizers, dinner, live entertainment and a silent auction. Musical guests include Sally and Bob Ackerman and Haley Coleman. Get your crab on and nab your tickets today.

Don’t Miss Okra Palooza 2013 June 30th

On Sunday, June 30th, The LOT will host Okra Palooza 2013 benefiting the Promise of Peace Community Garden. Chefs from Dallas restaurants, including Chef Graham Dodds (Central 214), Chef Chad Houser (Café Momentum), and Chef Janice Provost (Parigi) have been tasked with the challenge to serve up their best okra recipe.   Continue reading

Paradise at Parigi

Parigi restaurant on Oak Lawn was packed to the gills on Sunday night for a fundraiser for the Promise of Peace Community Garden. The garden, to be built in Little Forest Hills, helps implement the organization’s mission statement. Namely, “seeking simple solutions for increasing high school completion rates and healthy life styles as a result of positive community engagement. POP strives to connect the groups of neighborhoods in East Dallas through horticultural, environmental, and nutritional educational experiences”.   Continue reading
