This popular destination for tourists and fishermen is about a 6-hour drive from Dallas and houses dozens of restaurants featuring fried fish, BBQ and burgers. Over the last few years, however, it’s become a town where chefs from all over have made their home and brought with them award-winning dishes and concepts that rise above the “fried seafood platter”. The area also hosts several food festivals each year such as “Coastal Flavors Weekend” and “Oysterfest”. So next time you find yourself as one of the lucky ones relaxing, fishing, swimming, or boating, head over to one of these gems and enjoy a fine meal and a glass or two of wine. Continue reading

Coastal Flavors Weekend

7 ORGANIZER KAREY B JOHNSON PASSES OUT FRIED OYSTERSby Joey Stewart

A gluttonous weekend of food, fun, and information at the inaugural event of Coastal Flavors in Rockport, Texas.

The weekend began Friday afternoon at the charming restaurant GLOW. GLOW was showcased previously here on Crave, and owner/chef Karey B. Johnson organized the entire event.

The backyard patio party started off with live music and an assortment of drinks, including bubbly, wine, and a choice of specialty cocktails. A team of oyster shuckers arrived, and after a few short minutes, the trays of ice beds were full of the tasty bivalves. The local oysters had just been harvested from the waters less than 5 hours before. What a great way to introduce the event.   Continue reading

Fine Dining on the Texas Coast

by Joey Stewart

On our quest to seek out the “finer dining” gems along the south Texas coast we present GLOW, the second restaurant reviewed in as many weeks located in the town of Rockport, Texas.

Chef/Owner Karey B. Johnson showcases locally caught seafood in a restored boathouse just off the water in this fishing and vacation town.  “Our role at GLOW is to present the ingredients in a simple, elegant way that showcases the essence of the dish.  We wouldn’t want to muddle the flavors,” she explains.  “They speak for themselves.” Along with über fresh seafood, Karey also brings in meats such as antelope from Broken Arrow Ranch in the Hill Country and local goat for a featured slow-braised cabrito and masa dish.   Continue reading

Chartroom In Key Allegro, Rockport

By Joey Stewart

Finding something besides fried seafood and burger restaurants along the Texas coast can be challenging, so we are thrilled to have found an alternative on the island of Key Allegro, Rockport, in the form of six-month-old Chartroom.

Executive Chef Chris Veatch (far right) and his team boast a serious experience level as well as degrees from the New England Culinary Institute and Le Cordon Bleu

Located in a scenic setting on the marina, Executive Chef Chris Veatch aims to provide a finer dining experience to the area. “Our menu is upscale American, using only fresh ingredients. Everything, including sauces, is cooked to order. Nothing is held over. Even our desserts are made in-house,” he reports. “The focus is fresh, Gulf Coast seafood, but we’ve also created some interesting meat and poultry dishes.”            Continue reading
