The James Beard Semi-Finalist list reared its head today. The idea is if James Beard sees his shadow we enjoy a year of fine dining and a swillingly charming wine list. Or so it would seem based on the most recent semi-finalist list.
Dallas took a tough hit this year. Stephan Pyles generally makes an appearance, only to be a bridesmaid. With his fairly new Flora Street and it’s superior menu he should come out on top. John Tesar is whipping into submission some of the finest beef in the Americas yet went unnoticed by James Beard. Continue reading

Food has been at the heart of the State Fair of Texas since the gates first opened in 1886. Since 2005, each year State Fair concessionaires cook up tasty and unique foods for a chance to become a finalist in the Big Tex Choice Awards.
A group of contestants presented their creations to the State Fair of Texas in August. The field has been narrowed to eight. A panel of judges will pick winners in the two categories – Best Tasting & Most Creative. The James Beard Award Semi-Finalists were just announced and Texas received just a little more love than usual, particularly in the Best Chef Southwest category where you will see a small handful of DFW names such as David Uygur, John Tesar, and Matt McCallister.
We also spotted former Dallas chef David Bull, now in Austin, on this list as well. Also one of our favorite Austin restaurants, Barley Swine chef Bryce Gilmore was honored. Continue reading
