Farmers Markets in DFW & What Produce is Best in Spring

Farmers market season is back, and with it the question every Dallas cook eventually asks: which one is actually worth the Saturday morning. There are dozens of markets in the metroplex, and they are not all the same thing. Some are real producer-only markets where everything sold has to be grown, raised, or made by the person selling it. Others are flea-market hybrids where the produce is mostly resold from a wholesaler and the real action is the soaps and candles. Both have their place. They are not the same place.

A Taste of Texas at Ham Orchards in Terrell

Just a short drive east of Dallas in the small town of Terrell, Ham Orchards has been a staple of Texas summers since it opened its gates in 1979. This family-owned farm has grown into a seasonal destination known for its abundant peach harvests, blackberries and fresh produce, Southern hospitality, and sweet and savory treats. Spanning around 100 acres and home to nearly 10,000 peach trees, Ham Orchards offers a farm experience that draws crowds from across the state each May through August.

Good Local Markets hosts a Vegan Pop-Up Market on Saturday, October 13 (8am-1pm) featuring over 20 vegan-only vendors in addition to the weekly growers, ranchers and artisans everyone knows and loves.

Vegan offerings from 5 mile Chocolate, Good Earth Cheese, Lavish Clean Intentions Vegan Soaps, Nature’s Comfort Foods, Nature’s Plate and Reverie Bakeshop as well as GLM local farmers with fresh produce including Demases Farms, Wolfsong Farm, Chandler Family Farm, Restoration Farm, Gardeners in Community Development and Highway 19 Farm will showcase their vegan-only offerings at the Saturday market. Good Local Markets 2018 Season Begins March 10th

Dallas’ favorite all-local farmers market – Good Local Markets launches the 2018 season on March 10 at the White Rock locale (9150 Garland Road).  A 2nd location at Paul Quinn College (3837 Simpson Stuart Road) takes place every Thursday beginning on March 15.

Every Good Local Markets vendor grows or makes what they sell with no distribution.  GLM vendors offer produce, artisanal foods and handcrafted goods, all grown or made within 150 miles of Dallas. Continue reading
