12 Things to Do When Listening to Music

You love music, or you’re interested in learning more about it, then you’ll need to commit time to enjoy your hobby.

But happily, music isn’t one of those things that deserve your unrequited attention. The passive nature of the experience means that you can listen to music while doing other things. This is handy because it greatly expands the amount of time you can spend listening to your favourite songs! In this post, we’ll take a closer look at some of the many activities you can do while enjoying music, which will come in handy when you see that some of your favourite artists have all released music and you’re wondering how you’ll find the time to listen to them all.

Go for a Walk

There’s much to love about going for a stroll. Studies have shown that aside from helping to keep you physically fit, it’ll also help to enhance your mental well-being, too. If you’re beginning to feel a little stressed by all of life’s responsibilities, then put on your shoes, turn on your favourite track, and go for a thirty-minute walk. You’ll be in a better mood when you return home!

The only place we don’t recommend listening to music while walking is when you’re out in nature. You’ll appreciate the sweet sounds of the great outdoors more than music.

Hit The Gym

It can be difficult to find the motivation to go to the gym. After all, why go to the gym when you could just stay on the couch? Well, actually, there are many reasons — working out in the gym can be an absolute game changer when it comes to your physical and mental well-being, so it’s well worth doing. You’ll be a lot more inclined to spend an hour in the gym if you’re listening to music while working out. Load up your favourite music, and you’ll be able to concentrate on the sounds rather than the fact that you’re spending your free time lifting heavy objects.

Or Go For a Jog

Music is a vital component of working out in the gym. In fact, we’d go as far as to say that you shouldn’t trust anyone in the gym who’s not listening to music — that’s how essential it is.

You don’t necessarily need to listen to music when running in the area around your home, but it can absolutely elevate the experience. There’s nothing quite like listening to sweeping, inspirational songs as you run in a beautiful area as the sun is beginning to set. If you’re one of the lucky ones who can get a “runner’s high,” then playing the right song at the right moment is an excellent way to make your experience even more awesome.

Dive Into Work

Struggling to make it through the workday? There are days when we’re just not motivated, and that can really suck the fun out of the working process. If you’re looking for a quick boost of energy and inspiration, then look at playing songs that always get you up and energetic.

You can’t always control how your work day goes, but so long as you’re allowed to wear headphones, then you can control the music that you listen to. It can take a little while to figure out what type of songs help you work best, but once you’ve discovered it, you’ll never look back.

Work on Creative Projects

If you’re like most people, you’ll probably have a love-hate relationship with your creative projects. You’ll love the thought of having completed them but hate the fact that you find it so difficult to sit down and actually do the work.

Music helps with creative projects in a number of ways. For one thing, it helps with the creative process. Listening to great works of music can inspire you to reach your own creative heights, even if you’re working in a different discipline (many painters love listening to classical music, for instance). It can also help to keep on pushing through when you want to give up — if you know that the album you’re listening to runs for an hour, then you’ll be more committed to working on your project for at least that amount of time.

Play Games

Video games tend to have their own soundtracks, but some games come with a blank slate. Listening to the right type of music can not only make the experience of playing more enjoyable but can increase your chances of success since it can help to increase your concentration levels. That’s especially important when you’re playing a game that depends on strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, such as online chess or solitaire. By playing the right music, you’ll be giving your brain what it needs to perform at its highest capacity.

So, what is the “right music”? If you’re playing a game, then you should look for music that’s engaging without being distracting. Classical or piano music — or, in fact, any music without lyrics — is a good place to start.

Get In the Kitchen

As with going to the gym, people also seem to have a pretty complicated relationship with cooking meals. They know that they should, but they just can’t find the motivation to truly commit to spending an hour in the kitchen. Instead, they look to simply order food or quickly make a low-quality meal, which, of course, just doesn’t satisfy as much as it should. Good food requires time and care!

A tried-and-tested way to spend more time in the kitchen is to make the cooking process fun. If you open a bottle of wine and play music through your sound system, you’ll be more than happy to spend an hour preparing a meal. In fact, you might just find that the time you spend in the kitchen becomes one of your favourite times of the day.

Dance Around

Everyone would be a lot happier if they spent more time dancing. It’s one of the joys of being human, yet oddly, so few people seem to do it. It’s a free activity that can have a significant impact on your mental well-being — no one feels more miserable once they’ve finished a dancing session.

You don’t need to visit a nightclub to go dancing. You don’t even need to leave the house. Simply play songs that get you happy and excited, and host your own private dance party! You’ll find that it’s the best part of your day.

Read a Book

As with most things that are good for us, it can sometimes be difficult to sink into reading. Maybe it’s because of the rise of the internet, but we’re simply not reading as much as we could/should. One way to make reading more enjoyable is to listen to music. So long as there are no lyrics and the music is relatively gentle, you’ll find that it can help to draw you into reading.

So grab your favourite book, get cosy under a blanket, and begin reading while sweet music plays in the background.

Clean Your House

We mentioned earlier how people have a love/hate relationship with cooking. Well, even more people have a hate/hate relationship with cleaning. After a long day of work, the last thing you’ll want to do is spend your time with a broom in your hand!

Alas, it’s just part of being an adult. If you’re feeling unmotivated to clean, then look at unleashing the power of music. You’ll enjoy cleaning much more when you’re playing high-tempo music on full blast. Pick a few songs to create a playlist that lasts thirty minutes or so, and get stuck in.

Lie Down and Let Your Mind Wander

We tend to think that we always have to be doing something. But that’s not the case. Not only can you just lie down and let your mind wander, but you should. It’s at those moments that we get to really think big, coming up with dreamy plans that really make life worth living. You can get yourself into the headspace required to think big by playing your favourite, most inspirational songs. You can listen while lying on your bed or couch, but for the most impact, lie down outside. You’ll feel pretty in love with the world if you’re listening to great music while staring up at a blue sky on a warm day.

Go For a Long Drive

Have a long drive ahead of you? Then it’s time to go into your archives and dig out your favourite albums. Driving in the UK can be pretty stressful and uninspiring, but you’ll find that you can have a great time just by playing music from bands and artists that you love.

You don’t even need to have somewhere to be to have this experience. If you’ve got things on your mind, then a late-night drive with music can be a great way to clear your head. Trust us, by the time you’ve returned home you’ll feel much better about the situation!
