dsc00372by Steven Doyle

Troy Gardner is a clever man. You may remember chef Troy from his hotdoggin’ days when he owned Samson’s Gourmet Hot Dogs on Oak Lawn. Then he was putting out a terrific product, both for the omnivores as well as the vegans alike. Today he is running the helm at V-Eats Modern Vegan in Trinity Groves, a cozy little hot spot that is thriving selling only vegan dishes to pretty much anyone who loves food.   Continue reading

A Week of Celebration Honoring Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day

cfs jesusby Steven Doyle

We are in celebration mode this week as we seek out the very best Chicken Fried Steaks in the DFW area and around the state of Texas. It is research that is heartfelt, and I am sure our system is feeling all the fried beef we have consumed for the large list we will present last in the week as we pay homage to Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day.

Chicken-fried steak is a dish in which a cut of beef, usually thin and selected from the round, is breaded and fried. (Occasionally, some restaurants have also cooked a cut of pork.) The method of preparation is similar to that of fried chicken, which explains the name. The Texas staple is most often served with mashed potatoes and covered with cream gravy. Continue reading

Kenny’s Smoke House For A Curiously Delectable Brunch

ken1.jpg

by Alex Gonzalez

With all of the eponymous Kenny Bowers restaurants in DFW (Kenny’s Burgers, Kenny’s Wood-Fired Grill, etc.), it can be hard to keep up. Luckily, Kenny’s Smoke House in The Shops at Legacy is cooking up a whole bunch of new brunch options that won’t soon be forgotten.

Kenny’s Smokehouse has been open in The Shops at Legacy since January of 2013, however, the brick-and-wood barbeque joint didn’t start serving brunch until about a year ago, when they had secretly begun testing out new brunch items that weren’t listed on the menu. Now, every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., guests can choose from six delectable brunch items. Continue reading

Call it Crockett Row, call it West 7th, call it what you will. With the constant changes around this area of Fort Worth it’s nice to find something that has remained pretty much the same for four decades. Fred’s Texas Cafe has been at the same location on Currie Street for 40 years.   Just a little holdout shack squeezed in among the glitz and noise of bars and restaurants geared towards the younger set, Fred’s caters to everyone. Young, old, city and country everyone comes to Fred’s for good food, good music and their “cold ass beer”. Continue reading

Celebrate Norma’s Cafe 61st Anniversary

norma

Norma’s Cafe is celebrating its 61st anniversary tomorrow morning, which means rollback prices for a few of the staple southern dishes.

Norma’s opened during 1956 in Oak Cliff on Highway 80, offering high pie, from scratch homey dishes such as chicken fried steak and meatloaf, and plenty of mash potatoes and veggies. These are the things of an era gone by that are still craved by hungry patrons to the restaurant.
