Perot Museum of Nature and Science Launches ConnecTEEN to Empower High School Students with In-Demand STEM Skills

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science, in partnership with Lockheed Martin, is pleased to announce the launch of an educational and mentorship program – ConnecTEEN – to help combat the learning gap in North Texas and equip students with the tools to be knowledgeable, confident and motivated to pursue careers in STEM. In the United States, STEM jobs are expected to grow 10.5% between 2020 and 2030, and in Texas this number is even higher, almost 25%. Through programs such as this, the Perot Museum is committed to inspiring youth toward a lifelong love of science, in hopes of fostering one of the most talented and diverse STEM workforces in the country.

Mavs Back to School Rally August 19th

The Dallas Mavericks are kicking off the school year by encouraging active and healthy lifestyles in the Dallas Independent School District. This fall, the Mavericks are donating a Mavs FIT Kit to every middle and high schooler in Dallas ISD (approximately 85,000 students), a donation valuing $350,000. Continue reading

The Hunt For The Millionaire Pie Of My Childhood

While pondering pie yesterday afternoon, and that is something I do on occasion, I flipped through the Rolodex of my mind and stumbled upon the elusive Millionaire Pie. My first entry of this pie in my mind was when I was a wee lad and attending Dallas public schools. This was before I was yanked out when my parents were horrified by the busing situation and sent to a school which had a lackluster cafeteria. This was also back in the day when Dallas public schools had honest-to-goodness cooks whipping up freshly baked yeast rolls, and homemade beef enchiladas every Wednesday.

Fire back to a day when if you were not relegated to a sack full of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, smashed for your dining pleasure, you would enjoy real food created by the hands of the lunch ladies who I considered at the age of seven my second and third mothers. This was before the time of bastardized Sysco boxes filled with frozen food-like trinkets dumped onto a sheet pan and turned out at 400 degrees.  Continue reading

Jake’s And Other Local East Dallas Businesses In Danger Of Closing

DISD is on a land grab in East Dallas, invoking eminent domain to purchase property along Skillman and Abrams where they plan to erect a new school. This action will displace small businesses including an automotive repair shop, Chevron, storage units, an antique mall and Jake’s Hamburgers. Ahh, you knew there would be a foodie twist to this madness.  Continue reading
