Here Is Our Restaurant Advice For This Weekend

DSC00730by Steven Doyle

You want to eat at all the hottest places in Dallas this weekend, well I have a few stand up choices. With all the new openings we all love to try and hit the new ones before going back to our old reliables. If you are like me you love to add new spots to the rotation of restaurants. I will admit to one major obsession, and for those that know me even in the slightest will guess that obsession has been Shell Shack on McKinney Avenue. Shell Shack has served me well nearly twenty times since opening less than two months ago. One really good reason is because their kitchen is open until 1am, except Sunday where they close at 10pm. Should you drop by there, ask for what I usually get, which is a pound of Dungeness doctored up with a spicy concoction they call ‘the kitchen sink’. There are different spice levels, and I typically go hot instead of the very hottest which is called diablo. You can add potatoes, corn and even a tasty sausage.

I have actually written very little about Shell Shack, unless you happen to follow me on Facebook where I beat down my friends weekly with enticing photos of crab. The whole affair can get quite messy, but they have hand washing machines on the ready.   Continue reading

Resto Gastro Bistro Opens Today In Trinity Groves

DSC09123by Steven Doyle

The latest addition to Trinity Groves, the sparkling new area to the west of Dallas and across the Hunt-Hill Bridge, opens tonight. The list of dining options are growing at a steady pace, and the latest is fairly spectacular. Just ours from now Resto Gastro Bistro swings open and I think you are going to like this one. Think Modern American cuisine that implements French, Japanese techniques. Think delicious.

The menu that chef DJ Quintanilla has concocted is clean and bright, featuring dishes such as crab cakes with roasted artichokes, a red chili honey cured filet with sour cream potato croquettes and  veal cheeks with chive pommes puree, roasted white asparagus and royal trumpet mushrooms.  The dessert options are also particularly wonderful. Cocktails are not an afterthought at Resto. The menu was designed by Dallas libations wunderkind Eddie “Lucky”  Campbell. You will most definitely want to sip on the brilliant shishito pepper infused drink that has an ever so slight tongue tingle to it.    Continue reading

Fork Fight Recap: LUCK vs. Resto

DSC08989by Steven Doyle

Last night in Trinity Groves we experienced the latest chapter of Fork Fight. This is the bracket-style throw down between all the new restaurants that are soon to open in the area. Last night we enjoyed the hard fought battle between LUCK (Local Urban Craft Kitchen) and Resto Gastro Bistro.

Each restaurant presented four courses and paired each of those with beer, wine and cocktails. On the Resto side of the bar they included a ringer in Eddie “Lucky” Campbell, who is known in circles to be one of the better barmen in Dallas. Last night the man did not disappoint as he concocted some tasty libations including a version of an Old Fashioned that was hard to resist.  Continue reading

ff2by Steven Doyle

Fork Fight is a bracket-style battle between the soon-to-open restaurteurs in Trinity Groves, ten in all. The first few battles were meaty and furious, with tight but decisive victors who have moved up the line for a future competition. The last two Fork Fight battles were sold out, and the next fight will sell out very soon.

This Thursday a new battle is being waged between LUCK and Resto Gastro Pub. The evening begins at 7pm at 3015 in Trinity Groves and will feature beer, wine and cocktails, along with four courses times two for a total of eight dishes that you will sample in order to judge who moves up in the bracket challenge.

We just received an exclusive notice on a menu change and a highlight of the beverages that will be served that evening. Get your credit cards handy, you will want to buy a few of these seats.    Continue reading
