The 55-foot Big Tex is on his way to his roost at the State Fair of Texas just east of the number one Fletcher’s Corny Dog stand in Big Tex Circle. This year Tex’ boots were fashioned by Lucchese Bootmaker and were designed by Big Tex Boot Design Contest winner Jessica Bonilla.
Tex has a long and lustrous history dating back to 1952 in Kerens, Texas. The statue was an idea of Howell Brister, manager of the Chamber of Commerce, to encourage holiday sales in the town, and the “World’s Largest Santa Claus” stood over Colket Avenue for two holiday seasons — drawing press attention from as far away as Iran and Australia.

The final countdown to three of the most coveted food titles in all of Texas begins. The State Fair of Texas is proud to present the 19th Annual Big Tex® Choice Awards finalists. On Sunday, August 27, three winners will be crowned in the categories of: “Best Taste – Savory,” “Best Taste – Sweet,” and “Most Creative.” The competition began in early July with an impressive 57 entries represented by 37 concessionaires.

State Fair of Texas concessionaires are officially off to the races with a new lineup of incredible, edible innovations for the public to taste at the Fair this fall. The 19th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards offers another year of exciting bites for all appetites. The 2023 lineup is bursting with flavor – whether you love savory or sweet, you’re in for a treat this year. After much deliberation in the first round of judging, the scores have been tallied, and the results are in; 36 semi-finalists have been named to move forward. Comprised of 19 savory and 17 sweet entries, these semi-finalist contenders are one step closer to the main event, where they will compete for one of three winning titles: “Best Taste – Savory,” “Best Taste – Sweet,” and “Most Creative.”

A time-honored tradition at the State Fair of Texas, the Red River Showdown between the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners has been played at the State Fair since 1929. The big game will continue in Cotton Bowl Stadium and fans will get to say ‘howdy’ to Big Tex. With an 11:00 a.m. kick-off.
The State Fair is urging fans to arrive early to make sure they have plenty of time to go through security, not only into the fairgrounds but also into Cotton Bowl Stadium for the game. The State Fair is also urging fans to remember the clear bag policy in effect for Cotton Bowl Stadium by visiting BigTex.com/football.

The 55-foot-tall cowboy known as Big Tex is getting a brand-new set of threads, just in time for the 2022 State Fair of Texas. Say happy trails to his western shirt with its ‘smile’ pockets and two-toned, scalloped front yoke. Big Tex’s brand-new custom-made shirt by Fort Worth-based clothing brand, Dickies, may have some people wishing upon a star – a Lone Star, that is.
